Marlin Lever Filler...any Info?

Friends, I acquired a very cool (to me) lever filler that is from the Marlin company; I can't find much about the company on the Internet. Perhaps I wasn't looking hard enough. Does anyone have any information about this brand?

The J-bar is clearly broken and I think the section will require heat to remove. The sac? I don't know where it is, exactly; there's no resistance in the lever.

The nib looks pretty good and is marked "STAINLESS / 14K." Do pardon me as I ask a stupid question as I learn more about this stuff...the nib looks gray/silver. Could the nib have been gold-plated and the plating has been rubbed off?

I suppose I am just surprised that FPN has precious little to say about Marlin pens; you folks are so ridiculously well-informed about this stuff.

Marlin is an Italian brand and did a huge product dump a few years back. It was not unusual to find white gold nibs on their pens and they're awesome writers.

Moving this thread to Penne where you can learn more.

Thank you so much! This one was stamped/engraved with a name...a quick Google search may have turned up a bit of information...so I think the pen has been out in the wild for quite some time.

I agree that the pen certainly looks like it can be an awesome writer; it reminds me of a smaller Esterbrook. Solid and pretty.

I will definitely look around and see what I can learn. Part of the problem is that there are also Marlen brand pens and Merlin brand pens....so confusing!

Do you mean "Marlen"?

I did double-check last night and I'm looking at the cap right now. The very top of the clip says "U.S.A." and "MARLIN" runs vertically down the cap. Like I said, I was worried I was mistaken and those names are so similar!

Auto-error strikes again! Stupid-phone keyboards. Grrrrrrrr

Oh, if you're lamenting a phone-caused goof, please don't feel bad. I love that FPN is a community where everyone is friendly with everyone else. We're all just trying to help each other out. (And folks like yourself have far more helpful information than many of us!)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
