A Question For The Experts

Am looking for help with the identification of this Waterman please, got it from his grandfather

Do any of you fine people know what this pen is?

Can anybody help me identify it from the images attached?

Also, I would really like to use it, and to know how to properly maintain it. I never used a fountain pen.

Thanks a lot.

This is a Waterman 42 safety, with a "continental overlay" : those kind of overlays were done by a lot of italian craftmen.

The ink does directly into the body of the pen (use an eyedropper to fill it, with the nib inside the pen) but test it with water first, as there is a seal inside the pen what needs certainly repairing.

I could tell more about it.

I can't see properly the nib, but it doesn't seem to be the right one : could you tell what it reads ?

Another beautiful overlay.

I wish my grandfather had left me something like that, instead of a battered 515......(but nice anyway...)

Good luck with the repairs. (Do post a question in the Italian subforum who does repairs on these pens in your area...)

It is a keeper...

Oh, and ehhhh..... :W2FPN:

Not a Waterman pen, but a Rover radio

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Pen may be Waterman, but with a donor nib.

Walter8,

Looks to be a Waterman 42 continental overlay with a gold plated/rolled overlay with the incorrect nib. The correct nib would be able $50, and make this pen original, but maybe your Grandfather liked this nib better? Disregard the above auction showing another Waterman continental overlay, different overlay, unrealistic expectations as it lies.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
