Pelikan 800 Color Change

Recommended Posts

I have had a Pelikan 800 for a number of years. It is all black. I bought it as a new pen. Does anyone know if someone sells the colored/striped part of the pen?

I bought it as a red striped, but swapped the color part with someone on FPN years ago. Now I am doubting the decision. At the time I liked black better than the red or green versions. Now I am willing to re-visit my choice since I have quite a few black pens.

The black M800 is looking better all the time. This kind of money could go to fund a whole 'nuther nice pen!

I night just have to make it a long term project to search for a used 800 with a nice body and a bad nib, so that it is affordable. That will keep me out of trouble.

I don't know how interchangeable the pen parts are. If I am looking for the striped body that will fit my M800 nib, how wide of a range in different years will fit?

Posting an add in the classifieds here at FPN is definitely worth the effort. You might just find someone like me who is/was looking for a different colored pen body.

What does the cap top of your pen look like? That will give a clue as to the age/vintage of the pen.

The M800, throughout its run, 1987 to the present, is completely interchangeable. Any cap, nib, body, filler will fit any other part.

The same is *not* true, by the way for the pencils and ballpoints.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Rick. That answers that question.

You could try this too: www.custom-bindes.com

The web site was incredible. Thanks for the recommendation. I'll have to see what they cost. I was not quite sure what he is doing. Is he making replacement bodies for the pen?

Nope--just replacing the binde. His prices are pretty reasonable, so it's worth looking into.

I thought about recommending this as I had Chris Burton put a new binde on one of my Pelikan M800's. It's fantastic, I am very happy with it, you can see pics in the 'Show us your new addition to the flock" thread, about March of this year.

But fair warning, it took just days shy of a year to get the back and there were long periods when I got no responses to my emails. I don't know what went wrong, and Mr Burton never offered any explanation. It all worked out in the end. Since then I have had a complete pen set custom made for me by Shawn Newton. This was a very satisfying experience, not only from the business perspective but Mr. Newton worked with me for a significant period of time to help me figure out what the set would look like. He even created a mechanical pencil that had never been made before, I sent him the one I wanted him to build the new one around. You can see pictures of this set in a thread here:

I know that customizing a Pelikan is not everyone's cup of tea, but your black body model is just one of how many thousands? it could be a one of a kind.

A year is a very long time to wait. I guess I won't be pursuing that route.

wait a minute, don't just write it off, that was then, things may have changed since. all you have to do is make contact and ask. And as was mentioned earlier, this is a relatively inexpensive approach to your need. Or, ask the same questions (how long, how much and ,,, how) of Shawn Newton.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
