New To Mb; Which Ink To Use In 149

Recommended Posts

I just bought my first Mont Blanc after some years of building my modest collection of several other names. The pen is like new, although without box or papers; it had been inked (a blue) but was very clean. It still has the nib ID sticker on the barrel, "M [second line:] W.-Germany." I take it that the pen was produced over 24 years ago since German reunification occurred in 1990, and West Germany became non-existent as a political/economic entity.

Anyhow, anxious as I am to write with it, I have not yet decided what ink to start with. I have Iro Asa Gao and J. Herbin Eclat de Saphir, both beautiful, PR Cosmic Cobalt and Lake Placid, also lovely blues. Yes, I'm pretty certain whatever I use will be a blue - I use very little black and almost never keep more than one pen filled with it - but I just can't decide which blue.

Guess I just want to "talk" about my new pen, not really ask for advice. But if anyone has a favorite ink s/he thinks is just the cat's meow for the 149, please tell me.

I like turquoise inks coming off that large nib. There is the recent Balzac ink from MB which is sold out but can be found. I also like Visconti Turquoise and J. Herbin Bleu Pervinche (most likely that is incorrectly spelled as my memory is not the best). If you want a darker blue I can recommend Dark Denim from Franklin Christoph.

The pen is a workhorse so you can pretty much use what you want.

Congrats on the new acquisition. While I am not a purist about using the same brand ink and pen, I have to say MB inks work beautifully with their pens. They have some nice blues, Royal Blue, with a slightly mauve tinge, Permanent Blue, which is more straight-up blue, and Midnight Blue, a really sophisticated blue-black. If you are willing to go into the turquoise, I would second zaddick on the Balzac Dandy Turquoise. It is--dandy--but a limited edition and may not be as easy to find.

Happiness is a real Montblanc...

Don't have a MB 149 but I second the Parker Quink as I'm using the black one in my Lamy 2000 and performance is pretty good, just that it's kind of a wetter ink and dries up more slowly.

A not so often mentioned ink anymore is Sheaffer Blue. I use it with both my XF and M nib Montblanc pens and have been very happy with its performance.

Thanks to all of you for the suggestions! Gives me more to contemplate; guess it'll be a couple of more days before I decide.

I was using MB midnight blue all week in my new 149 and tonight I filled it with Diamine Oxblood and got me some Rhodia paper. All I can say is wow. It's such a gorgeous dark ruby color. Much more festive that midnight blue which is great in its own regard just not as fun. That's the beauty of fountain pens. A quick flush and its a new pen. Have fun!!

My MB 149 B nib performs well with Quink, Nooder's, J.Herbin and Pilot Inks so far. I do have a bottle of Montblanc Violet and will try that sometime soon. Enjoy your pen!

Congrats! I'm glad the deal worked out!

Quink blue black works nicely in mine but more recently I've been using Kon-Peki and Diamine Mediterranean Blue for a livelier blue color.

Mine is loaded with Diamine Red Dragon and I'm loving it. I previously had in Diamine Grey, which was also lovely. The Red Dragon is a lovely deep almost blood-red color. However, my "go to" color is often Waterman's South Sea Blue (not sure what the new name is).

I'm sorry I can't help you decide with the inks you have. I have tried others but end up only using Montblanc inks. I personally love Dandy Turquoise and also use Irish Green. I'm actually excited to try the Lavender Purple and new Corn Poppy Red.

I keep thinking about selling some of my pens but all that happens is I keep acquiring more!

Like others I prefer to use MB inks in my MB's.

Love Irish green and Toffee brown. I havent tried to many exotic or limited colours but diamond is great if you can find a bottle.

Anything Diamine, Herbin, Private Reserve, Sailor, Pilot Hiroshiziku, MB, Pelikan, De Adrementis and Rohrer & Klinger

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Is it true that Montblanc don't like people using any other brand ink in their pens as it voids the warranty

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
