Any Love For Pelikano?

Namo

Recommended Posts

Yesterday, I did load my red 2003-2010 Pelikano, a model that I haven't used for about a year and that O converted so it can be used as an ED filler. Loaded it with Noodler's Heart of Darkness.

I can't believe how comfortable this pen is! It's a school pen, as the Safari is, but really I completely forgot how good it was. The nib, here a Fine with a very generous flow due to the ED use, even have some softness. I can't believe I forgot about how good this pen is!

Will part of my writer's rotation for some time now!!

Yes, Pelikanos are cool. I am working on a complete collection but one is still missing, so the group picture has to wait...

Christof,

Are you just doing the different styles over time or going for all of the color variations as well?

I don't have one of my own, but a friend of mine (after being super interested in my pens!) found his dad's Pelikano the other day. It's a late 1980s one. Nib was a little misaligned (apparently a dog got at it?) but works wonderfully now. He's using old cartridges with it, which I am totally going to refill for him when he's through. It's a nice school pen. He's really happy with it. I won't ever own one myself, probably, but I could see myself buying some to give to others as starter pens.

Can't wait to see the group picture!! I did all my undergraduate school in Switzerland and learned writing with a Pelikano (and shifted to a Car an d'Ache BP when changing school. Argh!), so that will bring back some memories!

It's about 20 years later here in Canada that I did find a red Pelikano that I bought purly out of nostalgia, and I loved it a lot more than the model of my school years... I lost that one on a plane, and a few years ago, my loved one bought me one... as we were mountain climbing in the Swiss Alps!

No, I didn't, or don't remember. I am using the Pelikano as an eyedropper filler now (I gluded [?] the holes and did a bad job esthetically speaking) and the pen is really wet. From what I remembered from using it with a converter, the nib is far wetter now, probably giving a very generous F. The good thing though is that the pen can be used uspide down, the nib still very smooth.

My wife brought me home two Pelikanos from Germany. The most recent iteration and the one right before it. Both are M and pretty wet writers. Both fit my hand and write nicely. I'd say a much nicer school pen than most, but Germany has plenty of expertise in that department.

Christof,

Just the different Models...

...for now. :)

here's a picture of my uncomplete collection

I have other colors from some models, somes are mint and somes are heavy used.

No pen is restored or cleand. I will keep the pens as found which I think is a good thing to show how hard the life of a school pen can be.

the pen on the right isn't a pelikano, it's a steno pelikan.

...but still missing is the 1989 model.

Christof: nice!! Missing the 2010 model too? (Not a vintage, I know O:-) )

Algester: I wouldn't compare the general quality with a M model, but the comfort and the nib are amazing. What is surprising to me is that the Safari is receiving a lot of praise and not the Pelikano. I guess the changes of designs and the design of the Safari have something to do with it. And the fact that the nib of a Safari is not different from a nib of higher ends Lamys, I guess.

Edit to add: is it my memory, or is the quality of school pens better today than 20-30 years ago?

Yes, of course, the current model is missing too. But I usually do not buy pens at shops. I am waiting until the first will show up at a flleamarket. I didn't pay more than $5 for any of them.

The Lamy Safari is completely different in my eyes. It's a design classic! This will Pelikano never be...

(the 2010 model is really tough for sensitive eyes as mines are...)

Nice! Thanks for posting the pic Christof. $5.00 of lor less for each?... I need to move! Here in my part of the world, I will see a Pelikano at a flea market right after I see a fully restored 1928 Bentley.

Picked up this little flock and enjoy owning them. A lot of Pelikan pleasure for the money.post-100033-0-27484700-1413129532_thumb.jpg

Had a few that I've now gotten rid of

It's still, to me, a better pen than the Lamy Safari

Beautiful writing nibs on all of them

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
