I wonder what will arrive for £20

Maybe another project who knows.

It looks nothing like the ebay picture.

I suppose if it is a Carene I will be able to return it as 'not as described'. Seller says it is being despatched tomorrow.

I think not. Pictures are part of the description. If the pic is correct and the words not, the description as a whole is still correct

I might get a sheet of paper then.

So long as I don't get a golf club, handle or cover.

It has arrived,

There are a few marks which will buff out but it certainly is not a project pen and most definitely not a Hemisphere. For £20, the gamble was worth playing.

Funny thing, it came with that page print out for the Hemi and print outs for Charleston and Exception. So the seller did not know what he had.

It better not be, I've been looking for a reasonably priced fine Carene nib for over a year :o

Drat, I was going to make you an offer on a fine, but shipping would probably kill it. :)

D.ick No it's Medium.

Tas, where did you lose it.

Never lost it as such. I bought a badly performing medium from ebay ages and ages ago for around £30.

I'd become quite proficient at self grinding nibs so had a go at tweaking this one.

Never ground a "gold" nib before.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

It became a gorgeously smooth fat stub in about 10 seconds (with a bit of the section filed away by mistake too). I hardly use the thing unless I pretend to do some dcpritch style writing but my cursive is appalling.

Live and learn eh . . . :(

Tas, Sorry that was my English dry wit coming out.

Yes, I will take them apart and tweak the tines but grinding I leave that to the experts.

Well after a good clean in the ultrasonic tank and a polish it did not come totally free of damage. Not enough to warrant a rework project anyway.

So this week, this combination at only £23 (pen £20, box £3)

The section is as close to mint as they come and alone you are looking at £30 minimum s/h or £70 new.

Proof that you can never have too many Carènes! That cleaned up nicely.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
