The Wahl-Eversharp 715 - Should I Buy It?

Hello Everyone,

Let me start by saying I know absolutely nothing about W-E pens; the only vintage pens I've had in the past were Esterbrooks, Parkers and Sheaffers.

But I ran into a guy who is selling a Wahl-Eversharp #715; I believe these are the ones that were made when W-E was on the skids and making pens with "mixed parts." He says the barrel is from the Symphony line and the cap is from another model, I do not recall. It is a lever-filler and it seems to work. It has not been inked so I cannot test how it writes.

This pen is dark blue with a gold plated cap; it still has it's stickers - apparently, it cost $5 when it was new and it is labeled as a "Manifold Medium." It does have a marked 14k gold nib and the tines have a visible gap between them, so I'm figuring it is a wet writer, it might even have a little flex, I don't know.

The pen appears to be unused and it is in nice condition; he wants $100 for it; do any of you guys think it is worth it? There is no box, just the pen.

I've never really been into vintage pens, but every now and then, I think about giving them another try? My concerns about this pen are the following, (I SHOULD ALSO ADD: I don't know if these are valid concerns or not):

- It evidently was made during W-E's "twilight years," so I'm a little concerned about the overall quality of the pen, (a lot of times QC goes down when a company is on the ropes).

- It was a budget pen, (since by the sticker, it only cost $5 - the quality grade Parkers and Sheaffers were selling for $10-15 in the '40s and early '50s), and I'm a little concerned about "budget parts" in a 60+ year old pen.

ANY & ALL input would be GREATLY appreciated. :)

Best regards,

Chris

Reason:

1) Mixed parts

2) Tine gap

3) Seems as though the seller doesn't want you to test it.

4) A budget pen to start with

5) Company had gone way down hill

6) You're unsure yourself

Hello Charles,

OK, I think I'll let this one slide by. I was hoping my fears were groundless, but perhaps they are not. :D

Thanks,

Chris

Hello Chris,

I agree with Charles, If you have the chance, you should definitely test the pen before you buy it. Ask the seller if you can try it out. This should not be a problem unless the seller is hiding possible flaws. And once again, like Charles said, don't buy unless you're 100% sure that this is what you want and you know what you're buying.

Lots of inky thoughts,

Dingan

Hello Charles and Dingan,

Thanks again for your input; I have made the final decision to let it go. I shall continue my vintage hunts in more verdant pastures. :)

Best regards,

Chris

Hello FM,

Thanks for the recommendation; I always like to hear from more than one person recommending a pen dealer. :) I have been navigating her website, she has a lot of neat pens there- kind of hard to choose, I've already come across a couple I like more than the W-E 715 and are in the same price range.

Thanks again,

With the Symphony there were 3 cap types, the first two models had what is called a "slipper" cap like in this ebay listing (or this) which is the second model or . It's worth the wait to seek out one of these , they are high quality as well.

Looks like FB saved you a bunch of $$ and shipping hassle.

Already resacked, and cleaned up.

Also tells me that the original seller was asking tooo much.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
