Is This A Pilot Custom 742 Or Custom 823 Or . . . ?

I recently bought a Pilot on eBay, and it arrived today:

*translucent smoke barrel and cap;

*vacuum filler;

*#15 nib, 14K, medium

*and a cap band reading "CUSTOM 742."

Huh?

Except for that last detail, I'd be sure that I had bought a Custom 823. The cap on this pen is also threaded a little differently than my amber Custom 823.

Was there an early version of the C823 sold as a C742? Is this a Dewey-defeats-Truman fluke?

My apologies if this question is answered elsewhere on the forum.

Here's the listing for the auction:

I might be wrong, but I think the 742 is slightly smaller and with a slightly flexible nib. Maybe you got an 823 with a 742 cap......if the cap fits.

That is a Pilot Custom 823 Black Demonstrator for sure. I am currently looking at mine.

That's what I thought too. Same size as my amber C823. And I don't know of any translucent C742 with a #15 nib. Only the cap band threw me. Weird!

Thanks for the help.

I took away my words.

Those links should help a little.

The diameters of the pens are the same so the cap should be a good fit.

Thank you. It must be a C823 with a C742 cap. What confused me (and still confuses me) is the translucent cap. I thought all Custom 742 pens were solid black.

Thanks for the info!

The 742 does not have a translucent cap. I think it is just a case of the wrong cap band being put on the cap...

An instant collector's piece!

Worth millions! Or at least worth inking.

Here's a friend's Custom 823 smoke next to this "742" cap. The cap band is the only difference.

Thanks to all for playing along!

if it's pre-owned guess that what it means since the cap fits ideally I guess somewhere down the pen's life the original owner lost the cap and got a usable replacement instead this or that either way and 742/912 pens should NOT BE A FREAKING PISTON FILLER IT BLODDY COMES WITH A CON-70 CONVERTER SIlLY EBAY LISTING that or pics... but the 742 cap should be indeed a solid black not smoke...

Whilst it is a bit of a Franken pen it is probably worth $90 for the nib alone and the fun that you are/ will have with it.

Trying speaking to Pilot pens, give them a good story and they may sell/ give you the correct cap.

If you really really don't want it I would be interested. :)

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
