If Not Having Nib Modification Done, Does One Have Or Order From Nibs/jm?

I am planning on buying my first Japanese pen (Falcon /SF) and while most prices are in the same ballpark, if you stipulate you want a vendor to check nib alignment and make sure it's smooth, etc.....can that be done just as well at Pen Chalet, Jet Pens, Goulet, etc?

Thanks for your time.

goulet pens will check the nib if you ask them, jet pens and pen chalet I'm not sure but either way your assured to get a good nib with Pilot anyway

I've always wondered what goulet would do if a nib is bad? They don't have an in-house nib guy...

As I understand it (and it's possible that I'm wrong), the difference between nibs.com and most other retailers is that when you order from nibs.com your pen is tuned to your specifications. They ask you about flow preferences and writing pressure and John tunes your nib accordingly before sending the pen out (and you can send it back for a free retuning if it doesn't meet your expectations). When you ask most other retailers to check your pen, they just check to make sure that it works well out of the box. I have bought a couple of pens from nibs.com and they write amazingly well.

Gourlet pens won't send out a bad pen. If it's misalligned they'll fix it. They don't offer nib work through their site but they have people on staff who can do it. I would, have and will ordered from them with confidence.

Actually I don't think that Goulet will fix it if it's misaligned or something. I think they will only inspect it. But in doing so they can make sure it's properly aligned and stuff and will only send you a pen with a good nib. If you want a nibmeister to actually tune the pen, then you have to order from Nibs.com or Richardspens.com or somewhere like that. But like others have said, if it's a Pilot pen, the chances of getting a bum nib, no matter where you order from, are pretty slim. Pilot has excellent quality control.

While I agree with the other comments that Pilot nibs are generally great from the box, my only exception was the Falcon SF nib. It was too stingy with the ink and had too many hard starts for my liking.

Pilot produces the most consistent nibs. I have 10 extra fine and 10 fine nibs for my Pilot Vanishing Points and they all write exactly the same within the group.

They all have the same flow, smoothness, and are all aligned.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
