M800 Brown Tortoise

Diamine Chocolate, I think that is my favorite brown, though I have used a fair amount of Ancient Copper with my IB nib.

What I am hoping against all hope for is a M600 tortoise. The M600 series seems to be the red headed stepchild on the Souveran line, which is a shame because it is the sweet spot for me in terms of size.

I have it with Diamine Chocolate Brown at the moment as well, and it looks smashing! I've used J. Herbin Lie De The in the past and was also pleased.

I happened to preorder two when they first came out and I've been holding on to the one I bought from Bittner. They both write great, I only dipped the Bittner to see that it wrote well and didn't need returning, etc. And then I promptly flushed it, dried it and put it back in it's box. I didn't want to return it to Bittner after they went through the trouble of ordering it for me, etc. I don't think they would accept a cancellation anyways! I don't blame them.

Do I need to pay for a classified membership to sell it? That's the only reason you haven't seen it on the classifieds. I didn't want to buy a membership to sell one pen and suffer a loss. But seeing that the prices have stabilized somewhat, I actually wouldn't mind paying a membership since I won't be loosing much.

Thanks for all the suggestions on brown ink; I have a bottle of Pelikan 4001 brilliant brown which is nice but was looking for a darker tone. I'll check out the Diamine Chocolate and MB Toffee browns, they both seems really nice. Is the MB as dark as the Diamine?

Oh and the J Herbin suggestions sounds great too! Especially this Cacao de Bresil seems like a mysterious colour tone...

By the way, I noticed my m800 had some scratches from where the cap (almost) touches the barrel, because that the cap had maybe unscrewed during transportation (it was still on, just not completely firm). They are hardly visible. I thought it does not matter, because there will probably be more when I start using the pen. Anyone else had experience with the kind of micro scratches?

In my experience, Diamine Chocolate Brown definitely looks darker (and wetter) than MB Toffee Brown. I have the micro scratches as well on my M800 where the cap screws on- I think it's normal.

It's very common on Pelikans.

Thanks for this information. As also pakmanpony pointed out it does seem like a great combination with the M800. I will try to get hold of it next time I order ink (unfortunately I don't know of a store in my town that sells it...)

Yes this is also my impression. And I don't really mind a few scratches, because I think it is nice if with time you can see that a pens has been used (and I intend to use this pen :) ).

For brown ink, try Montblanc's Toffee Brown, especially if, like me, you are not fond of too much red in your brown.

Thanks for the recommendation, I got hold of a bottle of the MB Toffee Brown today, in a local pen store. It's a very nice ink, good flow and seems to fit well with the M800.

In certain light/angles it will appear worse, but on the striped pens it is less obvious than the black only. If you check your green stripe you will probably find it has the same issue.

The Tortoise M800 is a great pen, enjoy

I have seen posts discussing how and what to use to buff the very minor scuffing out. For me though that's a little too OCD. Just enjoy the pens for the great writing instruments that they are. :)

+1

Only the user and their OCD pen friends will see/know the issue. Everyone else will be 'wow, what are you writing with?'....

J Herbin Cafe des Iles is also a nice brown with sufficient shading to make it interesting.

Diamine Ancient Copper also suits it nicely.

NB: Your "local shop" wouldn´t accidentally be near Storkespingvandet, would it?

Thanks for these suggestions. I still have not tried any ink from J Herbin, but that is on my list.

And yes, I got the Montblanc Toffee Brown ink at Stelling :-)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
