Repair Costs For Mb 100Yr Rollerball

Hi, I'm new here, and I am posting to get any advice you can offer.

I have been the happy user of a MB retracting rollerball 100yr special edition from 2006. A weighty and slightly fat rollerball with the old Mont Blanc mountain text on the cap. (the bottom of the three in the attached pic)

I was using it daily at work, and noticed that the resin ring at the bottom of the cap was cracked.

I took it to the local MB shop here in Frankfurt and they initially quoted 74 Euro to replace the cap.

I just received a call from them saying it would be over 200 Euro as it was a 1 of 45000 special edition that requires to be repaired by hand.

Now I realise I was perhaps stupid to be using it as a daily pen, but I had no Idea that it would be damaged and if so, would costs so much to fix. Especially as it is just the 3-4 mm deep resin band at the end of the cap section.

I have asked to get to back, but can anyone suggest an alternative solution? It really is a seemingly small part that is broken. I don't think I need a whole new cap.

Hi,

Montblanc has a monopoly on spare parts, i.e. they do not sell spare parts separately. They are thus the only one that could repair the pen.

Sorry, but if you would like to have your pen repaired, you have the only option to send the pen to MB. Alternatively, you could buy another rollerball. You should get such rollerball for 200 Euro at Ebay.

Agreed on sending it back to MB as I felt they'll do a proper repair for you. Just like my 161 Le Grand ballpoint, I wanted to change the engraving on the barrel and the local service centre here has no parts for the barrel and hence sent it back to the MB factory in Germany to get it done, came back as good as new!

I damaged the cap on my heritage 1912 by posting it. The crack is similar to the one you're describing in your original post. Now I am thinking that I should probably stop posting the cap on my historical edition fountain pen.

Thanks all for the comments.

The crack happened through the pen falling on the ground one too many times. As I said it was used daily, throughout the day as my 'work' pen. do'h!

The next step will depend on what I get back from MB, There was a small piece of the resin ring broken off. If I get that back, then I will try the adhesive route. If it is gone and I have only a partial 'ring' at the bottom of the cap, then I will just keep the pen safe until I have a 'spare' 200E that I can use for this. That might be never, but I will see.

Looking at Ebay, I see other pens for 300+E so that is not yet an option, but at least I would have 1.98 pens rather than the current 0.98.

Thanks

B

Do you post the cap on your pen?

I find that the historical edition is really short unposted.

Good luck with your search.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
