Is It Odd That...

...I was born and raised in Janesville, my mom worked for years at Parker Pen, yet I do not have a Parker? I had a few Jotters over the years, but never a FP.

Oh, and is it common knowledge that one of the two high schools in town is named George S. Parker HS? It never dawned on me until now that the school was named after him.

Why don't I have a Parker FP? Maybe I just haven't found the right pen to scratch that itch.

Maybe someone here can talk me into one. I don't know, just thinking out loud I suppose.

To be a bit more specific either the all stainless or all stainless with just a golf filled clip Flighter P-45 with a 14k nib.

A Primo one should be $40-45 on The Bay.

Really?

I just had a look and all Primo ones were selling for twice that price. Everything else seemed to have some sort of defect. Considering all the hype around the pen I thought it may be worth, but not for $80, and not considering the section shrinkage problems people often talk about.

There are always 45 fighters on eBay for under $40, often under $30. I have bought 9 flighters or Coronets in the past year. Only issues were with scratches on two Coronets but I knew what I was getting with those. I don't believe I paid over $25 for any flighter, and only paid over $30 for one of the Coronets. I bought two of the flighters for under $20 because I couldn't pass them up.

Regarding section shrinkage, you can usually tell from the eBay photos (that goes for all 45s).

Just keep watching.

Also, section shrinkage is, if not very profound, not that big a deal. It tends to affect the staying-on of the cap before more than the writing, too.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
