Before I Do Damage...is This A Renew Point?

I picked up my first dollar pen at an estate sale yesterday. (I have a bunch of Js, love 'em!). Anyway, the nib is a 3668 with that pretty sunburst pattern. It doesn't want to unscrew easily and I'm thinking a gentle soak will probably do the trick. But before I try anything drastic I want to know: Is it possible that this is not a Renew Point?

Put the pen nib down in a narrow cup (I use a shot glass),

Add water no higher than the end of the section, to keep water out of the body.

Change the water every so often, so the ink is washed out from the section.

And be PATIENT, getting the nib out by soaking could take a long time, depending on how much ink has cemented the nib in place.

I would give it a 1 or 2 hour soak, rinse, then fill water again and let it soak overnight.

Check in the morning, and if not loose, keep going thru the soak rinse routine.

This is where an UltraSonic Cleaner (USC) really comes in handy for us impatient guys.

A minute to a few minutes in the USC and the nib comes out fairly easily.

Okay. Thanks, all

I have already pulled the section out of the barrel prepratory to re-saccing. The old sac was in the early stages of ossification.

I think I'll try the syringe first, then a soak.

One day, perhaps soon, I will invest in an ultrasonic cleaner.

Is your pen blue? My first Estie was a $1.50 pen with the 3668 "sunburst" nib. Very smooth writer. I soaked mine for quite a while before it let go. They are mighty good looking pens to me. Of course I like pretty much any Esterbrook that isn't a cartridge pen.

Paul,

Sorry not to reply sooner. I haven't been around for a few days.

It's red...that beautiful Esterbrook red. I have it all cleaned up, re-sacced, and inked. The nib is the first 3000 series I've had. It writes like a dream.

I've kept this pen in daily use since I restored it.

For some reason I don't seem to be able to post photos. I keep getting an error message saying "You are not allowed to use that image extension on this community." I've tried several formats.

Anyway, there's a much better photo of the sunburst nib than I could ever take on this webpage:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
