This Pen Is Hot!

These flames are so hot I can't finish the pen yet :)

Short a finial so I don't have the final dimensions yet but had some pictures and I figured I'd share the progress on this one.

First two pictures look great, but the third really shows off the depth of the flames. Will it come with a warning to use only with pot-holders? I should really stop browsing this subsection - wants vs. needs and all that!

Want = Need (Just sayin' :P)

I was back and forth between chrome and gold for the clip and polished vs gilded for the nib but found that gold tones just didn't quite look right against that background. Chrome and a polished nib just looked that much better I think.

Itching to get this one finished up but having to wait on a die that seems to be in limbo in the USPS system.

That is my problem . . . Wants all too often become needs. I try my best to keep the two in check (often unsuccessfully)! The chrome looks great. I would imagine gold would detract from the flames quite a bit and I find silver/black combos to generally work pretty well for anything.

My comment was really tongue in cheek. I really don't believe that want and need are the same thing and when I look back on that it was a silly thing for me to say at all. Hopefully nobody took that the wrong way.

I did however receive the die today to finish up the rear section, but unfortunately it'll be Friday before I can get out in the shop again.

What an absolutely gorgeous design. The choice of material isn't exactly to my taste, but the design - wow. Please allow me to applaud your excellent front section and the exquisite rounding of the end of the cap. And you avoided an awkward step in the pen body. Very well done.

Have you used it yet? It looks like it must be quite comfortable to write with.

Thank you for the kind words all.

The final shape was cleaned up a bit with the addition of the rear body section. I tapered everything down a bit so the cap would post properly without threads.

There is still a bit of buffing rouge in the joints to wash up but otherwise it's done and ready to rock. This one will end up in my sellable inventory but it'll be hard to let it go.

Specs:

Nib: JoWo #6 Fine point polished

Capped length: 5.25" / 133.2mm
Uncapped length: 4.95" / 126.1mm
Body dia largest: .52" / 13.4mm
Cap dia largest: .6" / 15.2mm
Postable: Yes
Weight: 17g with cap, 11g without (approximate, my fine jewelry scale took a dive so this is from my not as accurate postage scale)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
