Hmm. I reckon it would be very difficult, if at all possible, to build and programme a handwriting robot to write in Chinese with a traditional writing brush; the writer has to interact with the springiness and torque within the brush head within the context of pressure and twist at any one point, in additional to the shading (due to the amount of ink left in the brush and the previous ink consumption since the last dip).

No, I am not going to list my pens here.

This is really interesting. I suppose I can see the rationale behind their wanting to develop a more organic facade (as the article author says, he subconsciously filters out inkjet printed spam, and that the handwritten nature of the envelope addressing caught his eye), but this comes off as... mildly silly. I realize that it'd probably take a lot more effort and money in the long run to actually hire people to write letters and address envelopes, but I'm not looking forward to seeing how much this helps the robots when Skynet finally comes up :P

Cheers!

Kevin

Well, given that I've seen a robot play the bagpipes....

Yes, I'm serious. A few years ago I was at the Carnegie-Mellon University pavilion at the annual Highland Games in Ligonier, PA. Some professor designed robotic fingers that play a chanter, while a piston works the bag. This is all hooked up to a laptop with the music programmed in.

I must say it was very impressive, once it actually started playing tunes. Unfortunately it was also really, really loud. Not sure that the Kiltie Band (or the bagpipe major -- yes, at CMU you *can* major in bagpipe) anything to worry about -- yet...). Although there was a part of me going "this guy's parents shelled out all this money to go to college and graduate school. And this is what all that money went to: robotic bagpipes...."

ETA: I just read out the article (and showed the video link) to my husband. He's a software developer who has worked doing AI stuff, and he said that all the "qualifiers" are actually fairly easy to get around.

I usually address my handwritten envelopes using the widest cursive italic nib that I have currently inked. I haven't seen a robot with an italic pen yet.

I wonder if they can develope a robot like me - always sees another FP it wants to buy and use. Now that would be scary!

That's a very interesting article, but based on a bunch of previous FPN posts, I thought handwriting was dead? It may be interesting if robotic handwriting preserves it!

They can play guitar drums and bass too! Here's 3 robots playing The Ace of Spaces by Motorhead. Head banging is obviously a given

I loved this article, and it has brought a few thoughts to my mind,

what makes a man? cruddy hand writing.

the marking company's should be careful with this sort of gimmickry, In my case and allot of other people I know it causes resentment and anger.

fool me with some advertising trick and I am less likely to buy from you because in my mind if you are deceptive in your advertising, so you will be deceptive with your product to.

If a robot ever loves me enough to wright me a love letter I think I would be very happy. I can use all the love I an get.

I stand corrected. But, of the many mailings that I have received with robotic "hand written" addressing, I have yet to see even one with any trace of line width variation.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
