October Big Apple Pen Club Meeting -- October 9 !

This month, the BAPC, New York City's fountain pen club, will meet on October 9, the second Thursday. (Yes, it's true, we normally meet the first Thursday.)

It starts at 7PM and ends when the last person leaves. If you're in New York City for vacation, escape, or business, feel free to join us!

October Meeting Highlight: OKTOBERFEST !

Bring those German pens -- your MontBlancs, Lamys, Kawecos, and black German pistons for us to ogle, covet, discuss. Since so many vintage German pens are piston fillers, one of us will demonstrate disassembling one and show the Club how to perform simple piston repairs. Feel free to bring beer, pretzels, bratwursts, and any other items you want to enhance the mood. In addition, we are confirming the calendar of an exciting guest for the evening. More on that later.

Upcoming Meetings:

November 6: Celebrate Guy Fawkes Day and bring your British pens!

December 4: Sexy Italian Pens!

The meeting will be in its usual location at Summit Printing.

Summit Printing is at 216 East 45th Street, 15th Floor, between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, 1.5 blocks due east of Grand Central Station.

Taking mass transit is recommended. Because it is so close to the United Nations, there is very limited street parking and parking ramps are very expensive.

Subways to Grand Central: 4/5/6 from the north or downtown, 7 from Queens or Port Authority, or the S from Times Square and the West Side. Follow any sign to Lexington Avenue, walk uptown (against traffic on Lexington...) to 45th Street, cross Lexington to head east, then 1.5 blocks east.

My omission of Pelikan as a major German pen manufacturer has been pointed out to me by a reader. Yes, feel free to bring your Pelikans as well. All of them. And your Reforms, Gehas, Osmias, Matadors, and Goldfinks.

Sorry for missing out, the person I work for had a great idea at 3:06 that day and the result was working late.

It's frustrating because for the whole week he was saying, "I have to be out of here by 4:30."

Hi Tim,

 

The day after the meeting this month is Fountain Pen Day. Is there anything we can do or bring to the meeting to celebrate that?

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
