Silly advice I had as a seven-year-old, but sad rather than funny: my father ordered me to stop drawing with the old Parker fountain pens that I found in our junk box, because "it wrecks pen nibs if you draw with them". I wasn't pressing down hard on them or doing anything to hurt them; I was simply entranced by the results of drawing with blue-black Parker Quink.

If my godchildren wanted to doodle with fountain pens I would actively encourage it because it would help to develop their confidence in using them :(

UK-based pen fan. I love beautiful ink bottles, sealing wax, scented inks, and sending mail art. Also, thanks to a wonderful custom-ground nib by forum member Bardiir, I'm currently attempting calligraphy after years of not being able to do so due to having an odd pen-grip :D

Yeah, I too was told not to draw with my pens, or let anyone else write with them because they become bent to your writing style. Where did we all here this advice?

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

The pens recomended by my teacher were Osmiroid if one could afford one otherwise a Platignum. Both leaked like mad even when new.

We were also told that when we grew up we could aspire to own a Parker because this was the 'best' pen. We weren't allowed any nib that wasn't a medium size.

I thought this odd at the time because my father owned a Sheaffer which he loved a thick, large gold pen with a broad nib. Being a quiet docile and obedient child I kept my thoughts to myself.

As far as I was

So, when did you stop being the obedient and docile and which is now your favorite pen?

Never heard not to draw with them, but the advice not to let someone else use them has been around a long, long time. My Mom told me that years ago, and again perhaps fifteen years ago when I bought her a Vanishing Point. I see it in articles on the Web regularly.

The idea that a pen wears to your hand, I think, came from the earlier pens that didn't have good tipping material. Those folks learned that lesson and have been passing it on since. Perhaps, after many years of steady use, a pen would get a little flat at your sweet spot, but letting someone write a sentence - or a page or three - to try a pen isn't likely to change it. The tips aren't gold; they're a hard alloy.

That pen x from abc company is the best pen you can get. Regardless of price point.

I was told this at school in the '60s and was amazed when I found FPNers happily drawing away without injury to the pen or themselves.

More recently the most stupid advice has been not to bother with that silly old [fountain] pen and use a proper [ballpoint] one. Utter nonsense if only because I could never use up my draw full of ink!

I stopped being obedient and docile in 1984. My favourite is a Pilot Custom 74 with a soft medium nib.

You should only use ink from pen manufacturers, they have a financial incentive in making sure the inks won't harm our pen.

So the ink only makers figure they will make more money the more pens they ruin?

... those are cigars right?

Amber - it took me a few failed attempts, but finally here's your red stripe cigar. And the mandatory silly question: dare to use as an avatar? :P

Not intended as flack, sort of like a compliment - Napalm's drawing is evoking stirrings as only a Muse can. Reminds me of a "Mike Hammer" novel.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
