Scored Two More From The 'bay

While still in mourning for the loss of my most recent purchase (Sheaffer Intensity Carbon Fibre) and killing time at work, I decided to check out the auctions. I managed to score two Esties from the same seller, and I'm a little excited!

The second one I bid on for three reasons: the seller was happy to combine shipping, it has a 9550 nib (my current favorite in another pen), and it's not a J. Near as I can tell, it's "in the CX-100 family". Black lever-fill, chrome cap (friction fit from what I can tell). The lever has no ribbing or shovel/spoon end. I think it's a good looking pen, but if nothing else, I get another 9550

The first one is the one I think I may have done really well on. I think it's a standard, dark blue double jewel, a color I didn't have. Jewels look to be intact from the photos, but overall the pen looks a little grungy. The photo of the nib had a lot of glare, especially over the 2nd number, but after checking against the list of Re-New Points, I'm pretty sure I scored a 9128.

I agree, looks like a 9128, and in decent shape, too. You'll also have some fun buffing out the fine scratches. :D Good catch.

Best Regards
Paul

Man, if that really *is* a 9128 nib you have definitely made the finals of the "sumgai of the week" contest.

Nice going.

I must have been sleeping, or I would have bid on the blue J.

Both pens arrived today. The non-J is a pretty sharp looking pen, modern and shiny. Apart from a little dried ink (not too much), the 9550 nib looks as though it's never been used! The lever moves, but isn't as "crisp" as a newly replaced j-bar, but at the same time, I'm hearing what sounds like rubber flexing inside. This one could be interesting.

The J is an SJ and it does indeed have a 9128 nib :D Looks like it might need a little TLC though. The imprint on this pen is the best among my collection, and right now it's a beautiful deep blue. Some of those fine scratches look like they might have been made by teeth, but none are too deep.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
