Lamy Studio 14K (M) Medium Nib Exchange

I bought a Lamy Studio Palladium with a 14k nib in a medium and it seems very wide to me. I actually would've preferred a Fine or Extra Fine, but medium is what I got.

I'm wondering if any of you might have gotten wider than expected Lamy nibs. It is very wet and lays down a beautiful line if that's what you want. If you don't, then it just lays down a wet line.

Is anyone interested in exchanging a 14k Medium nib in fantastic shape for a Fine or XF?

If not I may try to sell it and purchase the one I want.

Thanks FPN

This is something you should post to the classifieds. Looks like you've got enough posts and whatnot too, so...Post away!

That said, about Lamy nibs, most of mine have been true to European size. As in, a bit wider than what you should expect.

Calculating.

I did go ahead and post it to the classifieds. We'll see if anyone's interested.

I have thought about getting it ground and probably will unless there is someone who wants to trade. I had not heard that the Lamy 14k nibs were especially good for grinding. That's good news. I am thinking about either a round fine/extra fine or I've been toying with the idea of an Architects point. Something different. I've had a couple of nibs done by Pendleton Brown and he did a nice job of his signature grinds. Do you have any preferences about nibmeisters?

Thank you both for responding to me.

I hear Pendleton does good work, Mike Masuyama is excellent, so is Mottishaw but with a long wait time, and I do grinds, too. I've ground a few Lamy gold nibs and those along with Pelikan and Montblanc have been my favorite gold points to grind.

Thanks for the suggestions and it's great that you also do some nib grinding. I will see what happens with the possibility of a trade, but you may hear from me soon about your thoughts on a grind for me.

I got an Accent with the 14K nib a couple of weeks ago. I'd read they were wide for their marking so I ordered a Fine, and it writes about the width of a medium, so if you want a F/EF you're probably going to need a nib marked EF.

It is like yours, a nice wet line.

Pendleton Brown ground three Pelikans to a "butterline stub" for me: one steel fine, one steel medium, and one 18K fine. I always prefer XF and F nibs for day to day writing, but my most favorite nib to write with out of all of my pens is the medium steel stub. However, the gold nib is unbelievably smooth in its current state of stubness.

I've talked to both Mike and Richard about doing nibs for me in the future and Deb Kinney is about to work on a Sheaffer for me as well. –I just like the idea of experiencing the work of the various U.S. nibmeisters. But I unequivocally LOVE the work that Pendleton did for me, and I can recommend him highly.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
