Help In Identifying A Pelikan Nib?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I bought a 120 recently with a gold nib (yep frankenpen). and would just like to ask about the gold nib that it has.

It's a friction fit nib with 14C-585 imprinted on it.

The feed looks to be of hard rubber.

Any idea which model of pen did this nib come from? I'm just curious...

My first question would be, are you sure that it is a friction fit nib? Even friction fit nibs had collars and I don't see a collar in the pics that you provided. Many times, the collars crack and when you try to remove the nib and feed, the collar gets left behind in the section. I would check closely there first. If the collar was there and it is not threaded, then it is truly a friction fit feed. Assuming it was truly friction fit, since the feed is ebonite, that would date to the early run of 400's from the 1950's. The nib, however, appears to be a somewhat later variant bringing me back to my original thought, are you sure that this is a friction feed? I don't mean to be pessimistic and the nib and feed are still serviceable if there is a cracked collar in play. I just wanted to present you all of the possibilities. Please post back your findings. I just put up a post today on my site and my next post later this week/early next week will be about cracked collars since this is such a common issue.

It could be a friction fit from one of the first models of the 120. I have one that is friction fit.

Soak the pen for a while (do or so) to make sure that if there is a collar, any dried ink that be holding it is dissolved.

Put the nib and feed back and try to unscrew it again. You may then find there is a collar to the nib.

Either way, I agree that it's a nice upgrade.

I went back to get the nib collar out, and realised it wasn't a friction fit nib...

Thanks for the help though!

seems to be a Pelikan 140 nib unit.

c.

Does the 140 nib have a hole at the back of the nib?

Now that's interesting. Always thought the 140 nibs didn't have any hole in the back.

Hi,

Hole or not, 140's nibs are shorter, no?

Pedro

To be honest, I have no idea, I haven't had too much experience with vintage Pels.

Maybe someone who has a 140 can comment on this?

Lacking measurments of my own right now, I've found these online.

I take the liberty of using these photos as they are duly credited and beautifully illustrate the difference.

400 nib on top, 140 nib below

But, getting back to the initial post,

I agree that, although not the original, this nib should be much more enjoyable to use.

Regards,

Pedro

Looks to be a 140 nib then, from the picture.

Thanks for the answer Pedro!

Yep it's a nice upgrade, use it for the occasional drawing, where the line variation looks sweet! ;)

EDIT: Sorry for the blurness of the picture, I think there was camera shake. The bright spot came from the ceiling light whoops!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
