What is a good cheap pen (light) for IG inks? Fine nib.

 

I have a Jinhao as a IG pen, but it's a slightly heavy pen. So I'm wondering maybe a good cheap pen only for IG ink be? Sub 20 USD pen.

 

Not a preppy though.... nor a Petit because I'll end up using a more colorful ink in it.

Also a good stub nibbed pen for IG use. I'm thinking about a Ahab + my stub nib. Not sure if there are any other.

 

Jinhao pens are slightly too heavy.

Non Lamy. Too expensive to keep buying more nibs.

What IG ink are you looking to use? I wouldn't specifically buy a pen for IG, IMO, IG ink is overly looked down on.

 

Over the past few weeks I have read so much about Iron Gall inks, and they are NOT bad, and NOT going to damage your pen.

 

Anyway, if you still want an 'IG only' pen, just pick up something like a Lamy Safari or Pilot 78G (the translucent feed will quite likely get stained, but it won't affect performance). I have both these pens, picked up for under $20 each, and they are both great writers. My Safari is a 1.1 but my Medium pilot is a nice wet Western fine. Safari weighs 17g and the 78G is only 12g.

 

Also, both of these pens can be fully dismantled, and cleaned.

I'm not afraid of damaging pens. I've been using it for a little bit now, but the Jinhao X450 and X750 is too heavy for long term use.

I see. I would make sure you are comfortable using the Safaris triangular grip (some people dislike it), and also note the slightly narrow 78G section.

The Pilot 78G was also my choice, but take care of he plating. I think it will be of better use a Metropolitan or even a Plumix. I used for a while Hero Blue-Black in a 78G with B nib and the inside plating almost vanished.

Hero Blue-Black... Nuff said.

 

But seriously, I've used Kon-Peki in mine for over 18 months and the nib is like new, if not better. Haha

I think I read somewhere that Hero Blue-Black is an iron gall ink....so you probably need to clean out your pen fairly often.

lcywolfe was asking about the use of a IG ink so I mentioned my experience as there were some advice about the 78G which, by the way, it is an amazing pen (the M nib is on my list on top of Pelikan M200 nibs).
