Comparing Ink Prices By Volume

Recommended Posts

Is there a prohibition about posting comparative ink prices (per ml) here? Because bottled inks come in different sized bottles, it's hard to compare prices from one bottle to another without doing some simple math or estimation, so I cooked up a little spreadsheet that gives ink price per ml for some of the common ink brands, with prices from several popular on-line vendors.

Figured I'd ask before posting and getting my wrist slapped ...

Not a problem. Noodler's is among the least expensive per ml, and Caran D'Ache is nearer the upper limit.

First off, a few notes:

- All of the following prices are in Euros in Germany incl. our 19% sales tax. Of course, in the U. S. and in Japan etc., the situation is different.

- All prices are as of June 2014 although I think none of these prices have changed since then.

- These are all "list prices". I.e. that seen in their own site. Most companies allow any store to offer any price they want. E.g. MB doesn't

The Writing Desk shows the price per mL for all of its listed inks in GBP (£).

Their brand comes to 0.10 US, and their Diamine is listed at 0.12 US.

Really? MB costs $30-$35 AUD. I think it is set by individual stores.

If you are going by cost per ml to get lowest cost, why not also look at the Pilot 350ml bottles and the Pelikan 1,000ml bottles.

Granted a 1L bottle of Pelikan ink would probably last me the rest of my life, so it doesn't make much sense, except in a school environment, where it was probably meant for.

I thought I would post a comparison of ink price in China. It might be interesting to see how prices differ in different countries. The prices are in Chinese RMB. 100 RMB is about 16.3 USD.

Do you have the price of Hero inks in China? It'll form a nice comparison to the rest of the inks.

Seems like Caran D'Ache is the most expensive in all the regions mentioned.

There seems to be several models of Hero ink which vary from 2 to 9 RMB (less than half a dollar to 1.5 dollar) for a bottle of 50-65 ml. If I take the highest price that would be 0.18 RMB per ml (0.029 dollar). It's really very cheap but I don't think they are well received for Chinese fountain pen aficionados.

That's why I didn't include it, few if any of the folks here would buy something like that, or that's my sense. If I only used one ink in all my pens and wrote a lot, then I might consider such a large size.

Of course, it's my list so I get to choose what's on it. :P

Actually for a college student a 350ml bottle does make sense. I can see that bottle lasting 3 or 4 years for his bachelors degree. Depending on how much he/she wrote and how wet the pen is. But as you mention, that is more the exception than the rule.

But, now I feel like getting a 350ml bottle, just for the heck of it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
