Favorite And Least Favorite Ink Colors

Not looking for specific inks here, but just general color groups.

What ink color do you love and find yourself collecting a lot of variations of?

On the other hand, what colors just don't do it for you? Do you avoid them all together? Keep trying them to see if you can find one you like? Do you have a bottle or two of that color just to have it as an option?

My favorite would hands down be green. Almost a third of my small ink collection is made up of green inks. Light greens, dark greens, ones that lean yellow, others that lean blue, and quite a few brands. There are even a couple brands that the only ink I own of theirs is a green. I almost always have a pen inked with a green ink.

I could really go two ways for my least favorite. The first is black. I just find black inks boring... I have one bottle of black ink because I felt like I should have one, you know, just in case I need a black ink. I've accepted my general dislike of black inks.

The other one, and the one I actively try to overcome, is brown inks. I've tried a few samples, but I haven't found anything that really speaks to me. I own one bottle, and I only bought it because it was a really good price. I'm not even a big fan of it... Despite this, I keep trying to find a brown ink that I really like... Maybe someday.

So many inks, so little time...

My color of the moment is greens/teal-ish greens. I've got 5 pens inked with green colors

I can't bring myself to buy a bottle of black ink... And I really should get some for work, but I may as well just use a regular pen there. The paper they have is (bleep) anyway.

My favourite ink colour is blue, and the one I like the least is red.

My favourite colour group is definitely browns, especially if you let that include dark browns, grey/browns like R&K Sepia, golds, and weird greeny browny shades. Swamp colours! A friend recently gave me a sample of his MB Jonathan Swift Seaweed Green and that's one I'm getting real excited about.

Other favourite colour group would be muted purples for sure for sure.

I've found that I can't get into blue ink at ALL, on the other hand. I do like Noodler's 54th Massachusetts, which is a blue-black, but I've just been super bored by every other blue ink I've seen or sampled. Shame that so many brands tend to make sooooo many blues.

I tend to cycle on color preferences, but I have noticed that I pull towards in-between colors: purple grays and greeny browns, bluish purples and orange-pinks. I have relatively few straight up blues, but a bunch of teals and cool off-grays. I finally found a blue leaning green I like. For a long time, there's been a gap of medium bright ink between olives and teals. I had a couple of dark inks I liked, but nothing punchy. But now I can say that I have most colors, barring a really true yellow. If pressed, I guess I don't really care for brick reds, though it is a pretty narrow band of color.

I even like black, theoretically, though I use it rarely because it isn't quite my style.

Sepia and Blues are my favorites.

Indifferent to purples.

Favorite is GREEN. It has become my personal color when in a non-business environment.

2nd favorite is the old reliable BLACK. I tried blue, but have been rather disappointed with what I found and am turning back to black.

Least favorite are: purple, magenta, and greyish inks (like a blue-black that looks grey).

I also found that how I like an ink will also depend on the color/shade of the paper.

Example, to me brown looks real good on an off-white/ivory/cream color paper, where the papers color complements the brown ink. Whereas it just looks OK on white paper.

My least used and purchased inks are greens. They're not ugly and I don't hate them or anything, but I never reach for them.

Most used and most variants would be blues, followed by browns - never expected to have so many red-brown, ocher, sepia, etc. colors.

I use a lot of blue so I really like to buy different shades of blue to have some variety in my writing.

I'm not really a fan of red ink, I only own one, being the herbin rouge hematite. I have that because of the sheen :D

I haven't found any magentas, mint greens or pale turquoises/cyans that I like yet. I'm not keen on "School" types of washable blues either.

Inks are so individualistic though that I was very surprised at how much I like certain bright, clear oranges and yellows :) also, R&K Alt-Goldgrun is definitely my favourite ink. And I've found that I adore greys!

I've always written exclusively with blue or blue-black ink until someone sent me a wonderful pen and a couple of ink vials, one of which was the older version of Noodlers' Black Swan in Australian Roses. It's gorgeous and has marked a turning point in my use of inks. Such a shame this ink was changed, but I'll now look for water resistant inks in subtle shades of red and purple. By 'red' I don't mean post-box red, but blacks and browns with a subtle red tint. And by purple I don't mean the kind of deep purple which makes me think of funerals, more a lilac, happy purple, or purply brown.

I've also lost my prejudice regarding Noodlers' inks.

I love greens, oranges, purples and all variations of blues.

I like reds, but seldom choose over the colours above. Browns are ok, but I don't get excited by them so they rarely make the rotation.

Anything in the pink range of colours is simply not for me.

I use black for drawing with and address envelopes as it is waterproof.

I have invisible ink that I would love to use but have yet to find a good enough reason. If I ever end up with nieces or nephews maybe they will enjoy "secret" messages from their fun aunt.

I do this! I have a five-year-old godson.....I've sent his mum a little UV keyring torch so they can hunt my letters for secret messages :D I think I enjoy this just as much as he does.....!

I just did this on a letter to my Mom, actually, and she loved it. I knew she had a blacklight - she has a little battery-operated fluorescent one she uses while antiquing to help date Depression glass - and left the bottom half of the last page blank. At the very bottom, I added, "P.S.: I know you have the right light to read the hidden message."

She's been showing it to everyone, and they alternate between delighted and bewildered.

I like blues, specially the night tones, and shades of brown and sepia, dark reds, sun oranges and black. I don't have most of the colors I like yet. I noticed I dislike grayish blacks, turquoises, pinks, light greens, washed out blues, yellows...

My favorite ink color is undoubtedly the deep blue you get with Noodler's 54th Mass. I hate any "black" inks that end up just being dark grayish.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
