Goldfinger's Onoto

Has anyone seen this before? It's a sold 9ct gold Onoto. But zoom in on the feed! The freaking feed is gold! I wonder what kind of slave trading-tobacco baron-crofter clearer commissioned this back in the day!

On the overfeed too, though? From photos 3 and 5 it looks like solid gold.

Unless he insisted on GOLD ink to write his letters. On GOLD paper. To take to the postoffice on a solid GOLD bicycle. Snipping a sliver off his GOLD tie to pay for the stamp, of course.

Curiousity got the better of me, and I had to ask... the over-under feed is gold!

Interesting. I don't know anything about Onotos, so I have no idea if this is unusual or not. Did you say something like: "Is this feed gold?" or "What is the feed made of? It looks unusual...." when contacting the seller? (The seller has yet to actually post any q&a about the pen -- sometimes sellers do but sometimes not.)

I have also a Mabie Todd & Bard 4663 from 1906 with over/under feed made from gold coloured metal. Because of the metal available I assume it is gold. Inside the mouth piece is also some ebonite. On the other side there are sticking out two and partly twisted silver wires reaching to the end of the pen.

At hand the color of the underfeed looks like the underside of the nib, but on the photo I am not sure anymore that this is gold and not ebonite.

Actually these wires are more freaking than they appear on this photo. When starting screwing the pen open or at the end of the closing the wires really scratch inside the pen.with cracking noises.

Hello Flounder,

I hope you let this one pass by; the pen is absolutely worthless... it hasn't any pocket clip.

Best regards,

Chris

  • 3 months later...

I'm resurrecting this thread to mention that I saw an eBay Onoto last week, conventional BHR albiet with gold bands on the cap lip and barrel, with another gold (coloured) feed. Did anyone else see it? It went for about £30 IIRC.

Have you a link? I tend to watch them and didn't see that one.

Thanks

What a lovely pen - thanks.

My banded one must be the el cheapo version - no nice chasing and I think that the bands are rolled gold

Sadly I am not allowed t post any pictures as i have apparently exceed my allotted "disk space"

Is that the end for ever for me? Must I register under another name?

EDIT - all is now explained. Here's my banded model:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
