Surprisingly Fp Friendly Copy Paper.

My workplace just made the switch from Xerox brand copy paper (unfriendly) to Staples #135855-WH copy paper "for basic, high volume jobs", which is surprisingly friendly! It is 20 lb, plenty smooth but not glassy, no feathering, bleed through, or show through with most inks that I have used, good dry times, even allows shading - something uncommon for cheap paper. It's made in China, costs $6.49 a ream. Here is a link Staples® Copy Paper, 8 1/2" x 11", Ream | Make More Happen at Staples®

Give it a try, maybe see if they have a sample sheet they will give you.

Thank you for sharing. I print out a lot of copies I have to mark up, and this is exactly what I need!

Thanks. I've been buying the cheap stuff from OfficeMax, not very FP friendly.

Go to Staples online and order some of the Sustainable Earth paper.

It is very FP friendly.

I prefer the copy paper, as it maintains a finer line than Sustainable Earth, and feels smoother with fine nibs, but it's all a matter of personal preference. The Step Forward wheat based paper (from Staples, had to order as it wasn't stocked in my store) is nice too, Of the three Sustainable Earth would be my last choice (I have all three).

I just bought some of this to make anchor charts and notes for my high school and college classes. Dan, you are not kidding about how solid this paper is. I primarily use a mix of medium and fine nibs, and it works well with them as well as my Pilot EF's. It also draws out the colors quite well, something I really like when I create my lecture notes. I like the Sustainable Earth for regular paper, but not as much for copy paper. Like you said, no feathering, bleed through or show through. I could write on both sides with no problem.

Backstory: I play in a British-style brass band (2nd euphonium). Most of our music comes from England, and it's printed on A4 paper. I like to have my own copies of the music, so I can mark it up to my heart's content, but copying from A4 to 8 1/2 x 11 is a pain in the zadnitsa.

So I broke down and ordered a ream of Hammermill 20-lb A4 copy paper. I've written a couple letters on it (using a lined backing sheet), and the pens and inks that I've used on it have behaved themselves quite nicely -- smooth writing, and no show/bleed-thru.

Which Hammermill? Their general copy paper? I've heard others express terrible dislike for it.

On the other hand, I really like and prefer the Hammermill Laser Print paper, although I've never seen it in A4.

I'll have to admit I was skeptical that Staples 20 lb. store brand copy paper would stand up to pen and ink where the 24 lb. Epson paper I just purchased had failed so miserably. (I swear I could hear a sucking noise as the ink met the paper, spread out and feathered!) However, I am utterly gobsmacked. (No other word will describe it.) I went to their copy/print department and asked for a single sheet, which was graciously provided, and tried it for myself. I was amazed. I left with a ream under my arm - after paying for it, of course. ;)

Thanks for the tip!

If they are the same, I may have to go test a sheet, and possible take advantage of that 5 ream deal. I have a toddler that eats through my paper stash. Having some also FP friendly substitute for him to use would be amazing.

It looks like the same packaging, but the model # is different, though that might just be the difference between the ream and the case. At that price, certainly worth checking out.

I just picked up a 5-pack, and submitted the rebate.

I'll check the paper later.

How's that rebate work? I saw that in the online ad...

Ah, that would keep me from purchasing. I hate rebates, half the time they never arrive. While poking around the site I see some Staples Sustainable Earth products and a few fountain pens on clearance, so they may still get my money. Thanks for the reply!

The thing with rebates is the store is hope that you forget to apply for the rebate. Then they get all that extra money.

Yes you really need to track the rebate and complain if you don't receive it. Not that I track mine.

Update: I just bought the 5 pack with available rebate, and it is NOT the same paper as I had originally reported on, although the label looks the same, it does feather and bloat the line, and does show and bleed through with inks that don't do this on the paper from work. I will be returning my 5 pack.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
