Just As Soon As It's Right, Along Comes Another Problem....

I'd been on the hunt for the "right" notebook for work - B5, soft-backed, ruled and (of course) works brilliantly with FPs. I landed on the TWSBI large notebook. Being a UK resident, I've been happy to buy from the excellent Cult Pens.

Everything has been great. No more A4 notebook to lug around, but enough space to accommodate my illegible scrawl. So, yes, everything's been great. Until now.

Idle curiosity got the better of me last week, and I took up Sach of this parish on the chance to own some of the legendary Tomoe River paper., It arrived on Friday, and I've been busy using it since then.

So what, you cry? Well, I've spoiled myself - no longer does the TWSBI seem to great - the paper just doesn't zing with colour and shading like the TR and now I want a B5, soft-backed notebook with TR paper. For work notes!

What have I done...?

Welcome !

You have discovered a problem that many misunderstand.

Q: "What if I buy some of the expensive stuff, and absolutely hate it ?"

A: Annoying, short-term waste of money. However, if you absolutely love it >>>> economic catastrophe ! :)

You can always sell a kidney. (Anybody wanna buy my wife's kidney ?) :lticaptd:

Indeed.

I think the best thing was the feeling that the ink colours jumped off the page more. Reminiscent, to be honest, of the cheap paper in the old A4 work-suplied notebooks I'd been using before "improving" the situation. The TWSBI paper is great quality, but makes the colours feel more subdued. Not a criticism until I tried the TR at the weekend....

Don't tell me this! I just received a TWSBI Large notebook and love it's size, shape and the paper is much better than what I had been using. So I'm overall, very happy! But with all the Tomoe River paper hype around here, I've been itching to try it. I'm just scared I'm going to like it!

I better not tell you I was eyeing up Design Y's EP Record journal last night….

That is a beautiful journal!

Thankfully, the price (~$135 USD) is a bit outside of my paper budget. I think I'd rather go with the Seven Seas Writer (more pages) with a GFeller leather cover. Overall, more pages and a re-usable cover.

It is. And you're right: the price is rather rich. I'd have to have something "good" in mind to justify it.

Will start investigating alternatives....

On the other hand, it would be a great journal for something really special. I've often thought of using something like that and having relatives write notes to my 2 year old son every year on his birthdays. It would end up being something that could be given to him on his 18th birthday or something. (though clearly, since he's already two, I haven't moved quite quick enough on this one!)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
