I used a 1911 Large - clear demo version loaded with Sailor ultra-marine - I love the shape of the pen and the balance in hand. The ProGear Slim is a better fit in my shirt pocket though and that one sees more carry time. My gf and I were discussing the EF nib vs pilot's EFand this one seems to get the nod from both of us.

I have a Sailor 1911 Large(21K nib) with the H M-F nib. IT's a good compromise between Japanese and European F nibs. I also have a Taccia

Savanna SE with the Taccia/Sailor nib in F. A very smooth writer! Both are c/c pens which doesn't bother me other than the fact that the

cartridges are proprietary. I have cartridges in both now but have used the converter in the Taccia with no problem.

KOP -black with silver trim and N Togi Nib. I like the nib on my 1911 demo better and will eventually have the KOP nib reground.

Just ordered a Sailor 1911 standard in EF today. It was on a bit of a special at Pen Chalet and combined with a recent 15% off coupon it got the price down to $124.31 shipped. Seems like a pretty good deal for a pen with a 14k nib. Not sure how I'll like the EF nib, never had something that fine, but I recently fell in love with the fine nib on my Pilot Metropolitan for writing in small 3.5x5.5 notebooks, so figured I'd give it a shot since they didn't have F in stock.

That EF nib is extremely fine - it is excellent if you print or for writing numbers - smooth enough - I can't seem to be happy doing cursive with it - but then I have traditionally gravitated towards western B nibs...

It'll be an experiment, I know I prefer more fine to more broad, broadest I have is a Pelikan fine that I think writes much more like a medium and it's nice for writing larger in a full size notebook but I don't like it for writing in a small pocket notebook as I tend to write smaller in those cases. I may find that this EF is one step too far, but at that price I figured it was worth giving it a shot...I think the in stock options were EF, B, and Music and while the Music was tempting I decided I'd gamble and try an EF for the first time. I actually didn't think I'd end up liking my Pilot fine when I first got it, it is way finer than my Pelikan, Edison, or Kaweco fines...by a significant degree...but I actually love writing with that pen a lot.

I'll update in a couple days with how it works out for me.

Seriously considering a full size 1911 black with rhodium trim. Is it worth the extra expense to purchase from a reputable nibmaster or should I take my chances with the wider market?

I use my Sailor Clear Candy today. It's my first Sailor pen. I love it because it can be easily taken apart for cleaning.

I bought a 1911m (F) recently, the nib size is really fine that I can even write small Chinese words. Now I worry about its ink capacity, may be I will have to fill the cartridges before the exams.

fljones3,

Unless you have some specific nob grind that isn't available on the open market,I wouldn't hesitate to buy a standard nib from a reputable dealer.

The Sailor nibs that I tried at the store were all very smooth OOB.

I'm using a Sapporo with a HF nib that I recently bought new on ebay. It's my only Sailor, so my experience is obviously limited, but it wrote perfectly straight out of the box.

Just got my 1911 standard with EF nib in...it's really really fine! Took it out of the box, put the converter in and filled it up with Sailor Tokiwa-Matsu and it wrote immediately and hasn't skipped a beat. Only paper I have with me today is printer paper, Field Notes, and a Banditapple notebook...none of which is the smoothest paper so I'm looking forward to trying it on a nice paper when I get home.

Honestly, it's probably a little too fine for me, probably not the best purchase I've ever made, but we'll see. I do like the pen overall though, very nicely finished and a great size for me (my other main pens are a Pelikan M215 and a Edison Beaumont, so this fits right in with my size preferences). Love the pocket clip (feels sturdier than many pens) and it posts wonderfully and to a perfect size. Also love how the cap screws onto the pen body, just has a very nice, precise, and solid feel. Probably should have held off and paid full price for a medium or fine nib version...and in rhodium trim....as it might just be the perfect pen for me in that setup. Hmm... :)

Yesterday I got my first Sailor, a 1911-Mid with a Zoom nib. Not sure how I feel about the Zoom nib yet. I don't hate it, as I like the variation, but I'm not sure if it's good for everyday writing. I'm going to give it a little time before I decide whether to keep it as is, or talk to local nibmeister to see what she can do to modify it.

I'm using my Sailor 21 Pocket Pen, purchased in Japan in the mid-70s, after about 30 years of inactivity because of not having ink cartridges that would fit it. I ordered some on EBay last week; they came in today, and it is inked and writing like it had been in use the whole time :D

I bought one about a month ago on ebay and not entirely sure what it is, either a Professional Gear or 1911? An older design I guess since it doesn't look exactly like anything on the online shop pictures.

It's my daily writer for keeping a diary and I'm getting rather attached to it.

It has a H - F nib and it writes very well.

  • 1 month later...

My first Sailor arrived today. It is the Koshu Inden Saya Sheath from nibs.com and it may be the most beautiful pen I have ever seen. The medium nib is more like a western fine, which is what I was hoping for. I'll try and post pictures after I figure out how to do it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
