Onoto has made a new fountainpen: an acrylic Excel in black. Has anybody seen, or perhaps own, this new pen? What do you think about this new pen?

I may have received an email about it, but I can't be sure.

I'm a big fan of Onoto pens. I have two Magna Classics which I use daily and they are faultless.

I have just checked the website and couldn't see an Excel in black acrylic. They may be at the penshow in London in October though, so I could see it there.

Clara ,

Onotos are one of my favourites.NEVER had issues with them which cannot be said of others even Montblanc

I think the excell is a pen made for the smaller hand.Ilike the silver end of the cap.Just seen on pictures though

I ordered one for my wife as birthdaypresent.

Be aware that the pen comes with a nr 3 nib , the smaller nib and not the bigger nr 7 that is used in most of the onotos.

My experience with Nr 3 nibs from Onoto is that , if you want a very fine writer , the F nib remains quite a medium width line writer.

Hi Arran,

Thank you for the advice for the nib. I write with F and M nibs, but lately prefere F

I don't have a Onoto yet, but like this smaller one very much

A pity they have changed the cap "jewel" to an inscription instead of the nice logo.

The diameter of the Excel is quite a bit smaller than the Magna Classic, so I'm sort of thinking its relationship to the Magna Classic is similar to the Duofold International to the Duofold Centennial.

In fact the diameters are not greatly different from the International. Looks like a nice pen, but with only 50 being produced, it may rapidly run out. For a gold nib & so much silver, £299 is a reasonably good price.

I think it'd be nice to have a larger run with different colours etc. , the 'proper' Onoto cap decal, black cap finial & make it effectively a production staple like the Magna Classic. With chasing would be good too. And thinner cap rings. Other than that I wouldn't change a thing! Seriously, I think it looks nice, but can't resist offering 'helpful' suggestions.

Regards,

Richard

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
