M200 Cognac Italic Questions

Tom Traubert

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

So, my second bird is due to arrive next week. I snagged the Cognac italic for £85 inc. postage, which is pretty damned cheap. I celebrated this by buying a Pelikan green and black leather case so that it can sit safely alongside my M600.

Couple of questions, if you'd be so kind.

How italic is the nib? Crisp or stub? Either is cool, I'd just like to know.

What ink would you recommend? I quite fancy Diamine Ancient Copper in it. Do you think that'd be a good match?

Better a witty fool than a foolish wit.

Most probably a stub, because most people don't know how to use a crisp italic and you'll have people knocking on the manufacturer's doors the next day to ask for returns because the nibs cut the paper XD

I would believe it's a 1.1 italic.

Diamine Ancient Copper? Rock on! Good choice :D

Mine would be Edelstein Amber!

A sincere man am I
From the land where palm trees grow,
And I want before I die
My soul's verses to bestow.

All those moments will be lost in time.
Like tears in rain.
Time to die.

It's a very wet stub with nice line variation. Easy enough to use for everyday writing, taking notes etc, and at the same time giving flair to your writing. It's a very nice nib I highly recommend.

I believe Pelikan does not make a crisp italic. Their terminology of italic is actually a stub. Even their M800 broad italic is a stub.

I have a new "stock" Italic nib for a M200 Cognac incoming this week, likely Wednesday or Thursday, and I can post a writing sample then.

OK, so the first thing to mention is that this nib is bouncy - I've never known anything like it! You have to go slow, otherwise it'll hard start, but it's worth it, as I hope these pictures illustrate. The last one is it getting cosy with my M600 in the Pelikan pouch I bought to keep them safe. Anyway, enjoy...

Not to my knowledge. I'd be on it if they did - I usually prefer chrome over gold. Except in Pelikans, it would seem.

Do they make the italic nib in silver? I'd love to grap one for one of my older m200 demos. I guess I missed it if it came with the older blue/silver version.

Binder has steel Pelikan nibs in silver-tone with .6mm or .8mm stubs, or .7 or .9mm cursive and crisp Italics

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
