St Dupont Or Not ?

Hi FPN,

I have the opportunity to buy the ST Dupont in the attached pictures, but I have my doubts whether it is the real thing or not ...

- no black square on the clip

- gold (colored) nib and rind on the section

I've alreasy asked the seller for close-up photos of the hallmarks, serial number and nib ...

Pls share your opinion. And ... the one who beats jar to the answer wins a cookie :-)

Cheers,

Cees | NL

Based on the style it looks like Fidelio FP with its signature clip design. Without black square on clip, good chance it is not real. I am not expert but happen to love Fidelio most among all Dupont models.

Your best bet is a closeup shot of nib and compare that to a real one.

I think it actually has the blue/black square- At least I think I'm seing it- . Look carefully at the clip's top in teh second picture.

I think it's because of the oblicuous cut that you "can't" see it properly.

I think so too.

Yup. Fidelio. Correct open nib. resin section. angled clip with inset. Most likely heavy silver plate and so no hallmark or proof marks on the body. Nib should be 14K. Interior should be as highly finished as exterior.

Similar to one on left in the middle with others for size reference.

TNX everyone!! ...

I got some extra pics of the pen and it has the 925 hallmark. Also based on your input I've decided to buy it (USD 140) ... I'll post detailed pics of my own when I reveive the pen ...

BTW ... smartson did beat jar and therefore wins the cookie :)

Congrats if it's real!

I would really like to own another S.T. Dupont but my problem is I don't know how to spot a fake. The fakes are just way too good and I end up getting scared away every time.

Earlier this week there was a S.T. Dupont Fidelio Bleu Outremer with box and paper work as well as a warrant card that was filled out by World Lux but then I looked at some fakes and I simply couldn't tell the difference.

I know what u mean about fake. Some fake looks really good for untrained eyes without actually handling them. Having box and paper helps but still no guarantee. But I notice there are fake only for certain models and style. Haven't seen a fake Fidelio yet.

I've come across quite a few fake Fidelios; most often though they either have the semi rolled nib instead of the open nib or a nib stamped 18K instead of 14K.

ST Dupont are of far better quality than Waterman and their nibs are top notch

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

All dupont pens have a number engraved at right the side of the clip , usually 7 digits and the words "made in France"

Normally , when you buy a pen , new , your retailer is supposed to write down and register this code , which is being managed at Dupont itself.Just in case , a false pen comes into a shop , the retailer and Dupont can always cheque the genuine character of the pen.

I would ask this very person to give the code , and if given , you could ask Dupont if it is registered.

I am convinced more pen makers should do this , not only to protect the brand , but also , us ,pen lovers.

Dupont pens are high quality pens , with great finishing quality , the nibs are nails but write quite good OOTB, service after sales is good also.

Most of my Duponts never had issues though

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
