Cross Verve Golden Shimmer

First Impressions (8/10)
This pen came in a standard cardboard box from Cross. However, the pen is impressive. It has this wonderful cigar shape and this copper metallic shine.

Appearance (9/10)
I was in love with this pen when I bought it. Loved the shape and the colour, the sleek lines, everything.

Design/Size/Weight (8/10)
This pen has great looks. Unfortunately the clip in the cap is not very reliable and tend to snap so the pen cannot be securely clipped to a shirt pocket. Other than that it has a very good balance, capped and uncapped. Despite being all metal it is not a heavy pen. It is quite a big pen, though. length capped 146 mm, 124 mm uncapped,156 mm posted. Weight 34,2 g

Nib (7/10)
The nib is a very beautiful 18 k gold nib. The disappointment was the thickness of the line. I bought a Fine nib and it is rather a medium. This aside, it performs well, without skipping, although some blobs tend to fall sometimes.

Filling System (8/10)
The usual Cross converter. The good thing is the quality of the system that goes screwed into the section. The bad thing is that it is too long for the barrel and hits some sort of spring at the bottom. I do not know if this is a deliberate safety mechanism but it makes difficult to open the barrel and puts too much pressure on it.

Cost and Value (8/10)
This pen was on my watch list for a long time and I got it very cheap froman ebay seller in America. No complaints

Conclusion (8/10)
A very sought after pen. I like its looks, and in fact I got a rollerball pen with the same design. It has served me well during many years. I have attached some pictures but they are not very good, sorry about this.

It's good to see the Verve again.

In my personal view the best FP Cross made in the recent past.

I have several.

The gold nibs were made by Pilot Namiki and are very smooth.

Size is always a range. A broad fine and a narrow medium are almost the same. That goes for every brand.

I wonder about that spring, perhaps you inadvertently mixed the RB barrel with the FP??

The clip works, but not like normal clips. You have to squeeze the top and then it opens up, while squeezing slide it down over your shirt pocket. But beware as the cap may become a bit loose on the barrel . I would wear a pocket protector. I always do, myself since a couple of artistically placed blotches on shirt pockets.... by several brands, I hasten to say, I don't think Verve ever did that to me...

Thanks for the review

I am glad to see this review. I love my Verve. I got rid of a red gold Apogee but could not bring myself to part with the Verve, though it burps sometimes.

I like the Verve, but sold the stainless steel version I had.

The nib was very broad, no hint of stubby-ness to redeem it, and extremely wet. I would buy another though! :)

Edited to add : apologies I should have said great review, thanks

We must be a conservative lot, only modern interesting and new design and the pen is not a commercial success.

You may want to dry a different ink for the nib performance and had any problems with the clip, some reported a premature failure?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
