My Blues ...

Like everyone else, I'm on a never ending quest to find the perfect blue. This is what I have so far.

Please excuse the terrible handwriting. I realize that every monitor is calibrated different, but these colors came out pretty close to reality on mine.

Thanks for sharing this, it's always good to see comparisons like this! I love Diamine MedBlue, one of my favourites. And Quink Washable Blue, I like its lightness, and for testing a pen it washes out effortlessly.

Have you tried Montblanc Royal Blue? Yes, a standard Royal Blue, but the it's ne plus ultra, the Led Zeppelin, of Royal Blues. Beautiful ink.

When I close my eyes, I can STILL see what you wrote up there with Bay State Blue! In a vivid yellow. I hope it's not permanant :D

Wow those are the blues that do not get you depressed...

Love that baystate blue... Is ist safe for Fountain Pens???

I have read some stories about that ink....

But holy Moly I LOVE that colour

Heh, that's what I used for years. I love the bottle design, as you can get every last drop out of it. The last entry ("Mongrel Ink") has about 1/3 Royal Blue in it.

I Used to be a two-pen / one ink type of guy ... when the (not "a", "the" ) bottle ran out I'd go out and by the same thing again.

Then I found FPN. My wallet hates me for it.

It's a ... controversial topic. With that said, I only put it into a cheap pen.

Thanks for that info

It is sort of the same with IG inks... I do not use them in my FP's no matter what the fans of IG say...

There are so many Ink brands with so many colours that I guess there is no need for ME forusing IG... I believe I can find any colour I love without IG

But still the baystate blue looks nice :)

I like blues very much, so thank you for that comparison - I found it instructive.

I too found Kon-peki and Diamine Med Blue similar when I tried them off some aliquots.

I also found Diamine Florida Blue similar to Med Blue but just a little "darker" and perhaps closer to Kon-peki and am happy to use either of those instead of Kon-peki.

Up until your comparison, I was under the impression that Asa blue was darker and perhaps more vibrant (I've not used it), but obviously not in your hands; interesting.

Again, many thanks.

Thank you for sharing.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Don't know where to start?  Look at the Inky Topics O'day.  Then, see inks sorted by color: Blue Purple Brown Red Green Dark Green Orange Black Pinks Yellows Blue-Blacks Grey/Gray UVInks Turquoise/Teal MURKY

I'm going to give the Florida Blue a try, thanks for the heads-up.

Really nice, but I'll have to admit that the mongrel (mixed) ink is my favorite out of the bunch as it looks like Waterman Florida Blue (a old standard).

I expected my Mediterranean Blue would be able to substitute Kon-peki but now it seems not! I may have to get Kon-peki as well!

I wished there were Sailor Souten for comparison...

As to Baystate Blue, the colour reminds me of ballpoint pen... Not too much to my liking.

Heh. You guys are good. That was the other main ingredient, and someone else already called out MB Royal Blue. That bottle started out by pouring the leftovers of some Florida Blue into the aforementioned Mont Blanc bottle that was very very low as well. Then the other blues came, but only in small quantities as I was emptying out pens. So it has at least trace amounts of every other ink on the list.

That actually gives me an idea, that involves buying pristine bottles of those two inks (because right now I'm actually out of both)

Mixing old ink from pen leftovers sounds interesting. A fun way to experiment. I'll have to try it.

Kon-Peki is lovely of course but I have to give +1 to Diamine Sargasso Sea. It's really lovely.

The praise of the praiseworthy is above all rewards.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
