Red Tortoise--All In My Head, Right?

Please someone on FPN, tell me that this i101 Red Tortoise isn't the last pretty pen I will ever see. That this isn't THE one I will yearn for forever. That there will be another one I will fall in love with. That no one else will want one. That I will be sorely disappointed when it arrives That I don't need this pen NOW: that the red tortoise M101 will be available and on sale in a year.

Take your time. I did on the Brown Tortoise (years in fact) and it all worked out just fine. And have even seen others that I could have jumped at, but didn't. There will be time. :-)

You could take to heart and mind Tweel's thought on it here.

It does sort of look like a bowling shoe. And you know how nasty those things are...the odor is just the most obvious thing. Really, you are better off without one. Others here will get them and we'll be sure to always let you know what a colossal mistake it was on all our parts. ;)

It's a nice pen, but nothing more.

I've fallen in love with tortoiseshells and was disappointed by the green M101. In the end I got an original dark tortoise from '38. Has much more character and flavor than this one can ever have - I suggest to go for the original. So you can skip this one easily.

If you really want one, take your time. The Lizard has shown that the price drops after some time.

I went to good bowling alleys, they sprayed some gunk in them when turned in...so no oder.

Want one of them....showed it to the wife...so the ice is broken.

Do have my 400N semi-flex B, so can write with it.

Now to nudge my Christmas gift from her to her wedding anniversary present to me...now, that is a new one....the bowling shoe is on the other foot. :) That leaves Christmas free...

Please someone on FPN, tell me that this i101 Red Tortoise isn't the last pretty pen I will ever see.

-It won't be, or the industry would not survive. They are mighty good at pushing the right buttons.

That this isn't THE one I will yearn for forever.

-Forever is a long time. Maybe a year, until the next edition comes out...

That there will be another one I will fall in love with.

-That's for sure. It has happened to me. I can tell you, it wears one out! Enough already! One pen, one ink! Wait, can I have one pen with extra nibs...does that count?

That no one else will want one.

-No one else? Is this that Sylvester Stallone pen we're talking about? Just kidding, if you like that abomination...

That I will be sorely disappointed when it arrives.

-It will write like a broken stick and no nibmeister ever born will be able to tame it.

That I don't need this pen NOW: that the red tortoise M101 will be available and on sale in a year.

-What amk said above. People are always hocking THE ONE (I've done this; I've got issues). They even hock their Nakayas - to buy more Nakayas...

All of this in good fun...enjoy the infatuation while it lasts is what I say... ;)

Given what I've learned about tortoises over the years, my philosophy is, "see a tortoise, buy a tortoise." No regrets.

I LIKE THIS.

The real question is, will you love it more after you buy (and use) it then you do while it is still a fantasy. Of course there is only one way to find out. Most of the (expensive) pens I have bought have been better than I had hoped, a few were disappointments which I let go but I almost always came on on the cost.

As an owner of a 400NN tortoise from the 50s I agree ...

Thanks for all the delightful answers. At this point I'm a bit torn between this one

which seems the very voice of reason (thanks risingsun). And this one

Which I think is equally true. I love my White Tortoise!

I can't seem to make the pen look like a bowling shoe. I love the red. I love the tortoise. Together they make me swoon  And this

You know... someone will buy the pen, use it twice, and think 'meh', and put it up on the classifieds here. At a discount. :-)

is perhaps the road I will finally take.

I would NEVER sell the ONE!!! Or would I. . . well not a Nakaya.

I enjoy all my pens so very much. But the cost oh the cost!!

Tinysnail, I totally get this. It is insanity but in such a tiny way, if insanity can be measured. I am usually a completely rational being ( ) but the pens are my tiny taste of the irrational.

Maybe I will look for the original? But -is that the path of the rational? or just one more crazy chase for beauty?

just one more crazy chase for beauty?

You're familiar with the old Greek concept of kalokagathia?

The beautiful is also the good one.

So you're on to the ultimate quest...

It is a model of The ONE,* personally, in my opinion, etc. But would you be happier paying any price for it or getting it at a more "reasonable" (scare quotes) price? Just to appease your worry that it might sell out, that's exactly what I asked one of the store owners and he assured me that it will still be here in December.

Even if it doesn't go on sale then, it probably will...the brown tortoise had a few runs and then went on sale (15% i think). I love mine so much I can't say whether I would have paid full price for it (assuming I could have) but I'm glad I'll never have to know--it was a lot sweeter at that price!

Edited to add: *in the absence of having a real vintage one!

I can now see the resemblance. Alas! (Or thank goodness, for my bank account). And a closer look at the photos reveals that the pen doesn't perhaps possess the semi-transparent beauty of the white tortoise. I will have to wait and have a look at one. In the meantime, I will be curious to hear about the binde (orange and opaque or transparent gold?) from someone who has seen one in person!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
