3D Printer Plans For A Replacement Vintage 140 / 400 / 400N / 400Nn Nib Collar ?

I have a 400Nn that has the cracked plastic nib and feed collar. I am thinking of a way to fix this without sacrificing a new Pelikan nib unit.

Has anyone explored 3D printing these? If someone has, or can put together the plans, this would be a very cheap way to replace the part, for anyone with access to a 3D printer (or a friend with one).

Anyone ?

Does someone have techinical specs for the plastic collar, or the modern Pelikan metal collar ? If so, I can ask an engineering student locally to reverse engineer what is needed and convert it to plans for a 3D printer, which I'd share here for anyone else's use

Send it to Pelikan in Hannover. They still fix them there.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

A tricky prospect if one is not in Europe. The home office directs one to Chartpak, and Chartpak disavows any knowledge of the possibility. Or such was the case three years ago when I made my attempt.

I think there is someone making replacements now. Look here. Haven't tried these, no connection, etc.

Hmmm. I know a guy with a 3D printer, but I don't know if he's got all the bugs worked out yet as far as lining stuff up, registration marks, etc. My husband has been playing around with it with the guy some. Plus, since he got laid off a while back, my husband talked himself into this entrepreneurship program at the Pittsburgh Tech Shop (which I believe *also* has a 3D printer); he wanted to get into the program, rather than sign up for a membership so he didn't have to PAY to go to Tech Shop  -- membership there is quite pricy).

As an aside, the idea of the program is that he's supposed to come up with a profitable business in something like 6 months and he has been picking my brain about maybe designing portable desks/writing slopes that will have space in them to hold pens and ink bottles (in an attempt to come up with something that is marketable --even for a niche market like FPs). Of course, he may have just gotten himself a contract job, so I'm not sure where that puts this entrepreneurship program

I just don't enough about the industrial design end of pens/nibs/feeds, etc -- things like what types of plastics would get used.

I may have overlooked this in the previous comments, but I am sure that part is patented and any attempts to "reverse engineer" it for sale would raise the ire of a Pelikan lawyer or two. Just keep your project quiet.

Do be aware that the 100 and 100n use collars unique to those models. The140 and 400 series of the 1950-60s (includes 500, 520, 600, 700) use another. And the M2XX-M7XX use collars that are *slightly* different than these.

Rick, do you see problems installing a modern nib unit assembly to a 50s-60s pen? I admit they feel a little sticky, but seem to go in and tighten up normally...

I would presume the work to put the feed specs into the computer for the printer is not minor.

Also one does not know if the available materials are ink friendly. You don't want porous plastic, as that would soak up the ink and could make it difficult to clean the old ink when changing ink colors.

Thanks, I've ordered this and will post a follow up when it arrives.

Dude! I am anxiously awaiting your report!

Me too. There's a couple of other fabrications of theirs I'm interested in, and a positive report on one might see me getting off the pot, as the saying goes.

Collars shipped today, so I'll give one a try when it arrives and respond to this thread, as will others I presume...

They fit a 140 nib and feed, but a very tight fit. I didn't try and force it too much, so the nib sticks out a bit more than it would normally.

The 400 nib is slightly longer, so it should work perfectly.

Not at all, and to prevent sticking just put a dab of (pure) silicone paste on the threads

Do all 400nn come with the flimsy nib collar? Can one determine if it's the that kind of collar without removing the nib? Reason I am asking is I just got my 400nn today and still have not discovered how to remove the nib. Thanks

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
