My First Nakaya

Thuja

Recommended Posts

I just finalized my first Nakaya order and I'm so happy that I'm borderline giddy. I wanted and got a Naka-ai Cigar Aka-tamenuri pen as it was in stock at Nibs.com. When it comes to the nib I wanted an EF with some line variation. As a person I'm very very impatient and as much I understand the time it takes to manufacture these pens I don't think I personally could wait six months or more for one. (x)

I inherited some money recently and thought this was the perfect time to get a premium pen. I told my news to my incredibly down to earth and sensible partner who just didn't get it (but you have pens already) not that I expected it.

(x) I'm a bookconservator and binder with a background in textile crafts so I understand and admire japanese hand crafts. Not that I claim to be anywhere close to a living treasure personally.

Congrats. I just picked up my first pen with a tamenuri finish and it is just lovely to look at and hold. I hope you enjoy it for years to come.

Well done! That is the same finish on my portable writer. I am entirely blessed in having a wife who has the same pen addiction so I don't have to explain myself <g>

That's a beautiful finish, congratulations. We'll expect photos and a writing sample when your pen arrives.

Congratulations!

I must admit I am in an odd place with my first Nakaya, a portable Kuro-Tamenuri with a medium cursive italic from Mottishaw: it is so unbelievably perfect for my needs and inspiring to use every single day, that I cannot imagine another pen usurping it's place as primary.

We'll see what the future holds, but I am definitely a Nakaya single-pen fanatic.

I've managed to work myself into a tizzy trying to choose a nib. My EDC pens are a 3776 UEF and Falcon SEF so should I play it safe and get an EF. Then again a soft EF would be lovely or an EF with tiny bit line variation. Help! I think I'll throw myself at the mercy of Mr Mottishaw.

Bit of OT but I'd love to visit the elders of the family one day. My first name is Tuija (supposedly it means a tree of life) so Thuja was a easy choise for a screen name.

Saga continues. Mr Mottishaw is on holiday and returns to work on the 22nd. I asked for a soft EF or even a little finer nib ground from a SF. As well as the pen I ordered a goldfish converter, I just love the way it looks. I've already ordered accessories for my Nakaya, today I received two truly amazingly beautiful pen sleeves from JapaneseHandMaden on Etsy but I'll write a separate review on those.

Hmmm, I ordered a custom nib on my new M600 from CFP and it just shipped, so someone ground the nib...

Got the message from Nibs that they've sent my pen. Now's the time for a little :bunny01:

  • 2 weeks later...

It's here! The pen arrived in Finland on Friday and I did the customs declaration straight away. Had to pay 3,7% customs tax and 24% VAT that came to 151 euros. (Ouch but death and taxes what can you do.) Even though it was shipped EMS it didn't arrive on monday and I had a very long day refreshing tracking data.

I've yet to ink it as one of my elderly Swans had a gravity related accident not too long ago and I'm still slightly shaky. First impressions are that the pen is beautiful and the blood red colour is absolutely perfect. The material feel wonderful in hand and the size is good. What did surprise me is that there's striations/brush marks in the base colour, wasn't expecting that.

Will ink the pen and post photos later this week.

Custom taxes and VAT: Ouch. Always painful and € 151,- is a substantial amount.....

Striations/brush marks ? Wow, that is surprising. Show us a photo of that please.

Anyway, have fun with it and enjoy it.

I'm not sure if it will show up in photos due to the sheen. The lacquer is absolutely faultless and glass smooth but there's colour variation in the base coat. I don't know if this is wabi-sabi or does the lacquer worker need stronger reading glasses (blasphemous I know). I'm very happy with the pen just surprised.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
