M101N Changing Color?

I have a m101n Tortoise (the greenisn-brownish type) that i got a couple years ago.

I noticed last night that some spots on the barrel are reddish now (i am not talking about reddish brown, i mean dark RED). The main one is an irregular shape about 3-4mm long.

Have i been inattentive, or can the celluloid change color ?

These bindes are cellulose acetate, which does not have the flammability of nitrocelllulose (which was used on the original 100N binds) but which is not as stable as acrylic either.

 

Cellulose acetate can color shift, crumble, deteriorate, outgas and sweat. When it's disintegrating it can have a distinctive vinegar smell. People try to segregate such decaying plastic so that it doesn't "infect" other items.

 

It would be surprising if your M101N was already exhibiting such signs, but poor or insufficient curing of the plastic can lead to this. There have been poor cure batches of recent production celluloid pens.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning.
