Questions Regarding Winston And Churchill

PeterGermany

Recommended Posts

Hello from Germany,

I am looking for a fountain pen with a broad nib, mainly for signatures, but also would like to use it for everyday writing.

Not sure, whether to take extra broad or extra broad italic. Where is the difference?

As I prefer silver against gold fitting, my choice would be the Winston. Does anyone know, if the Churchill would be

available with silver fittings instead of the golden?

I tried to phone CS but thre was just the answering machine. Will it be possible to return/exchange a pen if I do not

like it? Are there any dealers Germany?

Sorry for all the questions, but I am new with CS and would be very happy to get some answers.

Regards, Peter

I prefer the Winston b/c of the placement of the clip which allows the pen to ride lower in the pocket.

My go to guy on pens is Larry at Dromgooles in Houston , Tx. I have bought many a pen from him , plus a few fine pocket knives. Google Dromgooles , they have a nice website.

I would have a word with Dennis at Couronne du Comte. He is very helpful.

I owned a Churchill but sold it. Just didnt float my boat. However the Winston (with an IM nib) is a wonderful and substantial pen.

The CS nibs are pretty crisp in my experience so if you are not especially looking to write in the Italic style you maybe better off with a B or a BB ground to a stub for line variation. But YMMV.

Love the IB nibs. Yes, you can find Churchills with silver trim. Bryant at Chatterley Luxuries had some nice ones on consignment. You might check if he still does.

As far as I can see (light in pictures can be deceptive) La Couronne Du Comte in the Netherlands has two Churchills listed right now with Silver coloured trim: The LE Excalibur and the recent LE WW1Poppy.

Send Dennis a mail, or a PM. He can tell you more about them.

He is a joy to work with.

Thanks for the input. Will contact Dennis.

Tried to reach CS, but nobody answers the phone.

I will be in Great Britain next two weeks, so maybe I could

go and visit them. But not sure, if they are prepared to

accept visitors...

Things are being reorganized at CS, they are in a transition period right now.

People over there are doing all the posible to put everything in right place.

I own both pens and you just can not compare the 2.

The churchill is bit lower in weight and like the design of the clip.

The LE poppy is a real beauty with enamel poppy design in the cap.Low in weight and with a subte pattern on the barrel.

I like them with italics!!

Conways are just one of my favourites in design together with Onoto!

La couronne is great to deal with!!

Can you get the Winston in cc filler mode? I've only seen the twist filler type, which I'm not keen on.

Yes, on special order... (at least you could when I got mine, I'm not sure if they still offer that since the last management change)

EDIT. In respect to the latest news about Conway Stewart I would strongly suggest to wait with ordering, especially direct from the company.

Hmmm, yes, things are very slow at CS currently. I have one of the leftover CS100's paid for and in couple weeks since then, not a peep. I'm normally a pretty patient guy, but I'm starting to get a little antsy.

CS has ceased trading and is now closed.

CS is now in administration as it is called. Hopefully it will be sold to a new owner.

If you have paid for a pen but not got it yet, please make yourself known to the Administrators in Plymouth.

See the relevant topic in the forum for links to newspaper messages. There are the names of the administrator-firm.

Talk about bad timing! I paid for the pen (via Paypal) back on Aug 26, and had just sent them (CS) a note asking what the holdup was. Now I know, I guess. I'll take further discussion over the Administration thread, I had not gotten to that one when I posted here initially.

Sigh...

Thanks for the info, folks.

At least you paid by Paypal so you are covered.

Yes, I contacted Paypal and they are looking into it. If they can't contact CS or get my pen sent out by the 9/21, then they will refund my money, which is nice. I'm a tad upset at CS at the moment for taking my money but NOT delivering my pen. Hopefully it was just bad timing and not a more serious attempt to defraud me. I've dealt with them in the past and while the order process was less than smooth, I did get what I ordered in a reasonable time frame, and the pen was lovely.

It will be a shame if CS has a company disappears, I really like their pens.

Baric, I understand you are feeling bad about this. But going into administration is NOT a means of swindling customers. It happens when there are serious problems. The people at CS have been really trying their best to make us, the customers happy. They were perhaps not perfect at that, but there is no malignant conspiracy to swindle the customers out of their money.

That's not what I'm saying. They took my money on Aug 26 and were placed under Administration Aug 28 (from what little I know), it's hard to credit that they did not KNOW it was coming, especially in such a small company. So if they knew, why take my order and more importantly my money when the pen would never be shipped? Now, it could just be bad timing and the folks handling orders did NOT know, but the close proximity of dates worries me. I think it would occur to anyone in my situation.

I have had dealings with CS before and never for a moment thought they were dishonest. A tad slow, unaccountably, but that's not unusual for a very small company, it's not like dealing with Customer Service at some megacorp. I make allowances and as I said, I'm usually patient and even-keeled. I am by no means angry or ranting. That might come later :P . In the mean time, I reserve judgement.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
