Fascinating. Not too sure I like the yellow.. or that shade of blue.. but it is nice to see that Hero are still thinking about this old staple.

Regards,

Richard.

funny thing though, is a first thought thru my mind was: "is it a real hero?" considering the counterfeits.

I talked about them at some length a while ago.

And they also seem to be the small size variant of the 616.

No, I am not going to list my pens here.

Hmmm... wait and see if full sizers make an appearance, or pull the trigger - I notice the same seller has them at $6 each? The red still looks very appealling, and the yellow at least has that "where's my pen - oh right there" kind of visibility.

Reminds me of when I got the Lamy Safari in Charcoal and I Swear I spent a good 10 minutes trying to find the pen I had just put down. Turned out it was right in front of me on my black colored desk.

I just checked Taobao and there is also a white variant, but it seems a bit less common.

Hmm looks to be the small size too, I reckon. Here's some Taobao listings showing the white one Seele was on about, as well as some new photo angles of the rest.

Thought about grabbing one, but when I saw the 10-pack picture I changed my mind. They are not expensive but that is still money I don't want to spend on something that might not work well, the older model is known to problems when they come in 10-packs, some people claim they are counterfeit, others claim there are two plants producing them, and the 10-packs come from the bad one. When I looked into the older model, I learned about "YesPen", the vendor that garanteed he would not sell counterfeits, not sure what to believe.

Thanks for the Taobao links.

By the way, on one of these pages I noticed the following:

They look like fountain-pen inks. I've not seen them before but maybe I've just not been tracking.

These are "forum inks" by the China-based pen forum PenBBS. I do not go there... and that's what I am prepared to say.

  • 2 weeks later...

I was asking YesPen about the new colours, it looks like they won't be made available in the Jumbo/Doctor size. What a shame! Perhaps the smaller variant is more popular in China.

"I asked the factory sales department, and some dealers, These pens not Available in 'Jumbo' or 'Doctor' size.

Sorry maybe to disappoint!
Welcome again,
Sincerely, LIN"

Interesting :) I think I prefer the original colors, though the yellow would be nice if I'm somewhere where the pen would be prone to go "missing."

Haha nice of them to include photos of the delivery man (?). :P

I bought one of the yellow 616-2s from eBay. I really couldn't resist; yellow is my color in boardgames, and I am starting quite the collection of yellow pens. The very first fountain pen I ever bought was a burgundy Hero 330. The pen is very similar to the 330 in material and weight. The section is weird, however, there's a clear plastic ink window and the metal ring above it is not level all the way around, and the nib doesn't seem to be pulled all the way through the section and is off-center. The section also tends to unscrew when you're trying to take the cap off.

I filled it with Noodler's Habanero -- what are cheap pens for other than filling with reputedly dangerous inks? -- and it writes all right when I can figure out how to hold it, since the nib disappears behind the plastic body of the pen. Never thought I'd miss the Star Trek arrow this much.

Further down the page is this --

which is a Hero ink (Black?) in an old-style (circular) Parker Penman style bottle.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
