What Is Your Favorite Nib Type?

A lot of people like different types of nibs, but what is your personal favorite nib, perhaps specifically on a certain pen?

For me, I really like very thin nibs, and the Pilot Penmanship EF nib does really well for me. I'd just like if it was a tad stiffer

It depends on the paper and ink that I am using – I have widths from extra fine to medium.

Generally, I prefer a European extra fine or a Japanese fine for general writing.

Pilot, MYU 90, in F is virtually perfect. It's almost like writing with the wet ball bearing.

Semi-flex or 'flexi'/maxi-semi-flex....F gets used in some how with out really wishing it, they were on pens I "needed". I have them in a mix from EF to OBB....I learned to like F finally.

Semi-vintage and or vintage springy regular flex M&F (oft narrower than modern) often give more shading than the wetter semi-flex or 'flexi'.

I do like a nice vintage German OB with some tad of flex.

Do not like nails or modern semi-nails that some with out experience with vintage might think is 'regular flex', but is not, it is only what is now being made, like a modern semi-nail 400 or 600.

Semi-nail (like a P-75) is made because the ball point users can't bend it as easy as 'true' regular flex.

1.1mm italic, although I can only really use those when writing personal correspondence or notes. I find myself defaulting to fine nibs when I need to write something for work.

I feel like I'm among the few who like fine nibs. I am a little sad I don't like the broader nibs because they add a lot more character to one's writing

Western EF / Japanese F are my favourites.

For everyday writing, I favor a Medium or Broad with a left oblique grind. I tend to stay away from the Japanese Fines and smaller, I find them too scratchy for the most part.

I do like to experiment a bit and have recently found that I enjoy a good stub or cursive italic nib. I have quite an array of different nibs for my Pelikan M600, just to play with. I just love the interchangeable Pelikan screw in nibs.

I tend to prefer nibs that are ground to cursive italic or to be more specific--left oblique cursive italic 20 degrees. But I love ANY nib if it's smooth and responding well with great flow.

No favorite at all. It all depends what I'm using the pen for:

1. EF/F P51 for writing on crappy paper.

2. F M205 for EDC.

3. M Pelikan 400 for expressive writing.

4. B Pelikan 400NN for nice paper.

5. BB Montblanc 234 1/2 for signatures.

Different tools for different uses! :)

An extra fine nib such as the Japanese make. What I use most is an Esterbrook 9550 extra fine which is not as fine as the Japanese extra fine nibs.

Italic stubs - fine, medium, or broad, depending on what I'm in the mood for.

Franklin-Christoph, Italix, and Pilot pens are the best!
Iroshizuku, Diamine, and Waterman inks are my favorites!

Apica, Rhodia, and Clairefontaine make great paper!

I usually use Japanese fines, but if I have paper that's good enough I mix it up with some cursive italics, stubs, and flex/semi-flex (XF-BB ish) to add a little bit of flair.

I have to say though, as fun as those nibs are, I like the feeling of my Japanese fines the most, tied with a nice vintage semiflex nib. One feels extraordinarily precise, and the other is just a joyride and you can feel the rhythm of your writing. I do a lot of math and technical drawing stuff, so for that my favourite has to be the Japanese fine (specifically Sailor's), but when I write for fun I really like the feeling of my Pick Pen Co. Combo pen with a 14k springy/almost semiflex nib.

I love small stubs, 0.7-0.9mm

2nd place would be a fine-flex

What a strange world we live in, where people communicate by text more than ever before, yet the art of proper handwriting is seen as a thing from the past.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
