Sheaffer Vacuum In A Lot

Recommended Posts

I just got a package with four pens - 3 Esterbrooks, and a fairly clean pen with no markings other than "Vacuum" on the nib and the barrel. From what I've been able to find, this is an old Sheaffer brand. I know that the sac is gone, but I think this is in really nice shape, otherwise. I'll need to clean it, and figure out how to take it apart and restore it. I may be happy I stuck it out bidding on this lot. I got all four pens for $48. This surprise looks like it's the cleanest of the bunch.

Thanks! So am I correct in assuming this is an early model, because of the "Vacuum" being the only thing on the barrel?

Sheaffer's introduced the Vacuum-Fil pen about 1934 as a brand as evidenced by an April 1934 Saturday Evening Post ad for the "new" pen. This was part of the Sheaffer's sub-brand, WASP. This pattern was shown in 1936-38 docs I have and is nicknamed the "Screaming Souls In Purgatory" since it had no formal name to my knowledge. It was, however, a part of the WASP Clipper line of pens so it can be called a Clipper. There are other patterns in the Clipper line as well, such as the Lahn and another colloquially known to collectors as the "circuit board" pattern pens, simply known as the Clipper. Without internal documents from Sheaffer or additional previously unknown ads, this is probably the closest we can get to models and dates. I don't know that I would call it an early model just because it has "Vacuum" on the barrel. It is shown in the late 30's documentation and available in vacuum fil or lever fill. The Clippers also had "Trans-O-Meter" visibility on the lever fillers and full length visibility on the vacuum fillers.

I'm a newbie so I'm no expert. But I think it's a good grab. I haven't seen a screamer in a while on ebay. They don't come up too often. The last one (which was in excellent condition) sold for $75. I've been picking up clippers for about $30. To get this pen with another 3 not too shabby.

I have exactly the same pen. I got it from Greg Minuskin, my first ever hit from him. You got yours in a lot while I paid a lot! Lucky you, but I'm very happy with my Screamer because it has a very flexible nib! Check yours if it flexes. http://gregminuskin.com/?p=10233.

Thank god for my heart it wasn't a Blue Screamer...

Nice grab for sure though.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
