Waterman 56 With Pink Nib

Hello everybody.

Today I waited eagerly for my latest purchase to arrive in the post. I have long since become immune to my colleagues teasing of my rapidly consuming fountain pen habit. In fact I have now got 2 of them using a fountain pen as there primary writer and we even have discussions about ink colour much to the non converted's bemusement.

I brought a job lot of 10 fountain pens that were mainly Parkers (7), 2 watermans and another generic pen.

Now I am a waterman collector, so I sort of gambled on what I was buying. happily I was correct.

I got a nice ink vue plus a BCHR 56.

Now the 56 is fitted with a fabulous pink nib from a #7. I know this as I have another 2 pink nibs on my two RR #5's that are smaller.

I inked the 56, but found that the nib when flexed lays down far too much ink. In my experience this is because the gap between feed and nib is too great.

Now I have some questions that I hope someone can shed some light on.

1). Is the pink nib the same size as the standard waterman #5 nib

2), Is it likely the pink nib is too small/large for the #56 pen - letting out too much ink when flexed.

3). What would be the best pen to transplant the pink nib into (other than the obvious ripple#7) I want a user grade pen so that I can actually use the pink day to day

4). Would the pink fit a 15, 55 etc and which other pens would it fit.

5). Has anyone got a ideal #6 nib that I can use to restore the #56 with

The pink nib is perfect, the tips of times are just touching with the small gap between them. The nib flexes a lot with little pressure and the line variation I guess is XF to BBB.

The feed is set correctly with the shoulders JUST visible from the top of the pen.

The pen has been resacked

As always I look forward to the fantastic knowledge on this forum

Thanks a million

First a 56 should have a #6 nib. People could order a 56 with a Pink nib so let us see a picture of the nib. BTW, Pink nibs were set very wet. Try a dry ink like R&K Sepia.

I did not know that the 56 was offered with the option of the Pink nib.

Was it the same size nib as the ripple #7?

I have worked out how to load photos hopefully the links below will be correct.

I realise that the pink can put down a wet line - but this one is beyond what would be considered usable.

If the nib is the correct size for the feed - I may just have to disassemble and try some adjustments - I just don't want to be fiddling with this method if it is never going to bear ant fruit

OK, the second round is much better. The nib and feed do not look properly set to me. The nib and feed are friction fit and you can reset them yourself if you feel up to it. Oxonian post here on FPN and does repairs. You can also contact http://www.goodwriterssales.com/ (I forget her name but she's very nice) for some help. There are probably other repairers in the UK but I don't keep track of them.

You could order a Waterman nib in any degree of softness you liked, you could order a 56 with a #6 nib made as a Pink. You'll have to pull the nib out a bit at least, if it's marked with a 6 then it's a 6, if there's no number then it is off a 5 or 7 pen.

Agree with the suggestion to reset the nib. Either have the nib out a little more than the feed or push the feed in more. In this way you may be able to have a drier nib.

You will need a nib knock out block for this tweak.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
