Backwards Slant?

I have notice a few handwriting examples that have a backwards slant. Most date to about the 1910's (for example this WWI letter of of Google images http://researchroots.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/finn0001.jpg ). I also have seen WWI letters from my great-great uncle that had beautiful backwards slant. I tried my hand at the backwards slant and found it very difficult. My letters would lean up the page. Does anyone here write with a backslant? Is it a practical way to write? Rather, would it be worthwhile to attempt to learn to write with a backslant or would it do more harm than good to my regular, forward slanted writing?

This is my family member's style. I rather like it. He wrote that his writing was getting terrible ( I don't think so).

For a forward slant you'd usually tilt your paper to the left. Tilt your paper to the right instead, that'll help. I know that when my paper is upright I write with a backward slant because of how not used I am up such paper positioning.

If you like it - go for it! It's a very pretty slant, and I don't think it should be a leftie only priviledge ;)

I am a rightie, btw.

A writing-master and printer, Fuchs, wrote a manual on German writing in the 1520's. In it, he showed four different styles of common writing in the Germanies. One had a backwards slant, the other three slanted forward or were close to vertical. He felt it was a matter of preference and training. His only caveat was that one should not mix the styles.

Enjoy,

Yours,
Randal

From a person's actions, we may infer attitudes, beliefs, --- and values. We do not know these characteristics outright. The human dichotomies of trust and distrust, honor and duplicity, love and hate --- all depend on internal states we cannot directly experience. Isn't this what adds zest to our life?

Esterbrook had a nib that was supposed to be good for backwards writing. Look for video of Obama writing, he's a lefty.

I write with a backward slant. I am supposed to be a leftie but my mother pushed me writing and eating with my right hand. I could not write with a forward slant as a child without turning the paper almost upside down (top of paper at about 8:00). I remember my teacher coming around and changing the position of my paper and I would turn it back as soon as she moved on. Now I have the paper at the normal slant and write back-slanted. Think I was in junior high when I finally fully gave in to my writing style.

Interesting story cactusneedle. Could you post an example of your writing? I am trying to figure out the possibilities of writing with a backslant. When ever I try in the words on the page tilt up and to the right and letters like to bunch together. It feels quite unnatural to me.

The slant is not as pronounced as it was in school. This style is comfortable for me, while forward slant feels awkward. All in what you are used to.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
