Lwes 2014 London Pen Show - October 5Th

Contemplating coming to this, but unless I can persuade my only IRL FP-using friend to come with, I shall be all alone. Which isn't the end of the world, but it'd be nice to have someone to get ridiculously giddy with ;)

"Iktomi is a spider fairy. He wears brown deerskin leggins with long soft fringes on either side, and tiny beaded moccasins on his feet. His long black hair is parted in the middle and wrapped with red, red bands. Each round braid hangs over a small brown ear and falls forward over his shoulders. [...] Poor Iktomi cannot help being a little imp. And so long as he is a naughty fairy, he cannot find a single friend."

I created the original post as a carry over from other LWES show notifications but I am not sure that I can alter the heading.

Mods - Please feel free to amend the heading if you feel that a descriptive title is more appropriate. Perhaps LWES 2014 - London Pen Show.

Happy to be of help, added date as well....

Dreweatts & Bloomsbury will be at LWES with a stand showing some of the highlights from our forthcoming autumn pen sales.

We look forward to meeting fellow fpn members and introducing ourselves on the day.

I will be there 5th year running. Can't seem to find a list of exhibitors for this year anywhere. Any ideas? I know from bilateral conversations that many usual suspects will be there but is there a comprehensive list somewhere? Rajesh

I hope to attend - it will be my first pen show and I'm really looking forward to it.

Will there be pen restorers in attendance? I have a Swan number 4 nib with a badly bent tine which I would like to have straightened (I appreciate that I may have to leave it with them rather than have it done there and then!)

Also (I really am new to this), what is the protocol of trying out a potential vintage pen purchase at events such as this? Are traders generally happy for you dip them and write a line or two?

Thanks for your assistance.

John Sorowka is a nib fettler who is usually working at the show. He will take a look and either sort it there and then , or recommend that you leave it with him. There are other repairers who attend as well.

None of the sellers of vintage pens have ever refused to let me dip a pen and try it.

Take cash though, not every one is set up for credit cards.

Nib fettler - never heard that expression before. I've heard that John Sorowka dislikes the term nibmeister, it will be interesting to hear what he thinks of being a nib fettler :D

Great, that's very helpful, thanks.

There is some expected disruption to travel on Saturday and Sunday and I suggest that you look at www.tfl.gov.uk

to see if your journey may be affected. The most significant is the planned closure of part of the Docklands Light Railway for those arriving at London City Airport.

Click on weekend travel arrangments.

There is no service into Bank or Tower Gateway, DLR usually organise a replacement bus service.

For those who only travel to London once a year you should note that the buses no longer accept cash and you will need an Oyster card.

Hi all,

I'll be there selling vintage pens at the stand of CONID.

At the occasion of the WES I'll offer my vintage pens with a 20% reduction on the marked prices

CONID will show their newest Bulk fillers, being the Kingsize and the Slimline.

Logically their standard size Bulk fillers will also be available for sale.

Look forward meeting you there !

Francis

Tube, DLR, buses, London Overgound and national rail within the TfL area all accept payment by contactless credit/debit cards as well as Oyster, so need to buy an Oyster card just to make a bus journey (unless allof your credit cards are like mine without contactless payment).

Oh great!

CENTRAL LINE: Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 October, no service between Leytonstone and Epping / Hainault (via Woodford). This is to enable us to carry out drainage renewal work at South Woodford and to replace track at Chigwell. Replacement buses operate. :gaah:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
