Pens That You've Obsessed Over?

I not all that rational when it comes to acquiring new pens, there are times I find my self obsessed with acquiring a new pen just because I want it. I'm hesitant to term them "Grail Pens" because to me that belongs to a pen that triumph all other pens in my collection in all aspects, whereas the pens I've obsessed over aren't always that in my mind. The want might have been driven by the material of the body, the nib, or my perception of the pen's place in history. When I'm in that phase I am constantly searching everywhere for one to get on my price terms.

some of my obsession over time

Hero 100 - growing up in China this was the pen with the gold nib and as such wanted one for nostalgic/sentimental/heritage reasons, am still looking for one with a nib made in my birth year.

Lamy 2000 - The look, the material, the history, really nothing more to say.

Pelikan M400 Brown Tortoise - I loved the brown striated body, the piston filler, the Pelikan brand history etc

Pelikan M800 - really wanted a West Germany marked one with older nib and managed to find one on ebay.

Sailor with a Naginata Togi Nib - Read a lot of good things about the nib's capabilities and eventually acquired one via Engeika's auctions. Was not disappointed.

Visconti Homo Sapiens Bronze age - Was all about that lava material, it really tickled my interest

Sheaffer Imperial IV, VI, VIII - Touchdown filler, Inlaid nib, history, got to have them all. Also not nearly as hard to get as the PFM.

Latest obsession is about that black rose acrylic found at Edison pen.

With that said, care to share the pens that you've obsessed over?

I obsess over my Pelikan M605 and I lust for one with blue stripes. But oh my goodness do I love and hate this nib in equal parts. I'm thinking that my problems might go away if I throw money at my problem (e.g. buy new from Mottishaw/Binder and get it tuned...)

My budget is limited, but having been given a TWSBI 580 in Black/Rosegold for my birthday I'm now hellbent on acquiring a mini version in white/Rosegold :D I just adore how well this pen looks and behaves. My most special pens have been those that were gifted to me, which I'm sure is the same for most members here.

I was also given the most beautiful Montblanc 90th anniversary 146 so I've been thoroughly spoilt. That really was a grail pen for me after falling in love with the rosegold trim and pretty nib, and I'd never dreamed I'd ever actually own one! I'm still amazed and touched at my beautiful friend's generosity.

I have just ordered another Noodler's Ahab though as the one I've already got works so beautifully for me. I am preparing for the new Herbin grey 1670 ink that isn't even out for another couple of months.....but the thought of that shiny grey in a flexy nib.....ooooh!

UK-based pen fan. I love beautiful ink bottles, sealing wax, scented inks, and sending mail art. Also, thanks to a wonderful custom-ground nib by forum member Bardiir, I'm currently attempting calligraphy after years of not being able to do so due to having an odd pen-grip :D

Because my budget is now limited to pens than it was previously, I find myself as of late obsessing over the Pilot namiki Falcon. Looks like sooooo much fun. Then there is a certain nakaya pen but that is more of a 'Grail' for me. I have money aside but I don't know if I should use it for a pen. I know I WANT to... I think I might obsess just a little longer. Or not... I don't know..

Of course I want a Monte Blanc eventually and Visconti Homo Sapian too. But those I know will be down the road. Maybe for my 30th in five years.

Hey everyone!

zchen, I had an unhealthy obsessison over the Pelikan M400 White Tortoise, and now a proud owner of one. The barrel and the nib is just gorgeous! For me, I dare say it writes better than any other pen I own.

I'm lusting over Raden effect on anything! FP's that I look at frequently are the Nakaya Naka-ai Cigar/Raden and Pilot Vanishing Point/Raden. :puddle:

Obsess may be too strong a word, but there are two pens I would LOVE to own. One is the Pelikan M1000 Raden Sunlight. The other is a Nakaya Dorsal Fin 2 in Ishime Kanshitsu Silver. Both are a trifle expensive (the M1000 is twice that of the Nakaya), so they are have to be carefully considered ;-)

Obsession might be too weak a word … Possession comes to mind (maybe some dead fountain-pen-nut dude has attached him/herself to me :yikes: )

Have recently drooled over Omas 360 & various clipless Nakaya`s, but I`m still firmly decided not to spent bigger bucks just on nice design & a coating of Urushi.

But I am tempted to invest in one or two pens with specialty nibs: XF-BBB wet noodle (as always) and a Sailor Specialty nib

PS: Of the pens I own I`ve been specially possessed with acquiring:

Sailor Sapporo Zoom nib, Mabie,Todd & Bard, Wahl-Eversharp Doric + Skyline, Various Stylomine 303`s & Bayard`s, Franklin-Christoph Transp. Eyedroppers

I will never be able to afford this beauty but I drool (sorry, Rose Nibs) every time I see pictures. Pure unobtanium but the naturalist in me behaves like a moth near a flame around this pen.

Add me to the list of people obsessed with the Pelikan M400 White Tortoise (heck, all Pelikan tortoise pens, honestly). I might be able to buy it this week and am stupid excited about it :)

I'm really quite taken with the history and design of the Lamy 2000, but I've never actually held or used one so I won't even consider saving up for one until I see how I actually feel about it once it's in my hand.

I love a lot of the high-end maki-e, urushi, and raden pens out there. Not obsessed with them, yet, but they sure are lovely to look at. Same with many Edison pens- that material sample gallery is really something!

I'm really into my Noodler's Ebonite Konrad. I think it's actually my favourite pen. Maybe not the smoothest writer of my pens, but it writes wonderfully wet and feels so good in my hand. Being able to take apart my Noodler's pens has helped me to learn more about fountain pens and get real comfortable with them.

I've met Jeff and Joyce but it was quite a few years ago. Anyone know if they're still making pens?

For whatever reason, I have vintage Sheaffer Imperials on the brain lately. Probably won't be able to buy one this year (my remaining pen budget will probably be spent on repairs, and possibly a couple bottles of ink), but I keep thinking of them.

Also, vintage Aurora 88s!

I spend the most time obsessing over my Nakaya purchase. I spent hours looking at the nibs.com availability page trying to decide what I wanted, other than that though I cant think of any other pens that I have truly obessed over. I have more expensive pens but I think the issue was the endless amount of options. With a normal pen company like Montblanc or Aurora they really only make 2-3 (new) pens that I would want to own but I would be happy to own just about every Nakaya.

Obsessed over - I would like to say Mont Blanc 149 but would quietly add the Princess Grace MB to that list too. There aren't many pens that I want that I pause over and mull about getting but MB's have this effect on me.

My Parker Sonnet is always at work, scribbling nice thick lines on various papers.

I'm kind of in love with it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
