Pelikan Edelstein offers line of eleven inks in stunning bottles. The content however is not really stunning.

Edelsteins are quite pricey. You can check ink priices in Poland and have comparison. 1 PLN = 0,3 USD (more or less)

MANDARIN: Although I like Orange I'm disappointed with Mandarin. It's just not made for fountain pens. When I pay premium price I expect premium performance. Mandarin performs badly in most of pens.

AMBER it would be amazing ink if only it would give consistent results. Unhappily this is not the case. In some pens and on some papers it looks stunning. On others it looks plain and boring.

SAPPHIRE subtle but too delicate my taste.

http://imageshack.com/a/img540/7879/1JZ2WM.jpg

TOPAZ clearly a winner. Waterproof, amazing shading, intense color.

http://imageshack.com/a/img536/1967/9TVRRP.jpg

TANZANITE I don't really like blue/blacks but this one is malleable and is a joy to write with. Amazing properties, not my color.

http://imageshack.com/a/img540/310/XfB16w.jpg

JADE - disgusting

http://imageshack.com/a/img661/548/ZkTTgE.jpg

AVENTURINE - nicve green, sometimes it lacks good manners and causes some feathering / bleedthrough. Nice color anyway.

http://imageshack.com/a/img537/7725/Q7Hxc7.jpg

RUBY - for me it's ugly.

http://imageshack.com/a/img538/4110/I8cUYB.jpg

GARNET - generic, boring red with no waterproofness. I'm not able to figure it out why something like this was released as Ink of the Year? It's not even close to a Ink of the Minute.

http://imageshack.com/a/img910/575/rvbAlo.jpg

TURMALINE - at the beginning I didn't like it but with time I started to appreciate the facty it has personnality. It's quite unique and waterproof.

ONYX: I don't use / like black ink. Nothing interesting.

SUMMARY

I've tried all of them and I believe that Edelstein inks are highly overrated. Most of them are decent inks with good properties, however the colors aren't special in any way.

I like TOPAZ and I believe it's worth every single penny.

I like also Amber, Aventurine and Turmaline but I have some issues with them.

I find Ruby, Jade and Onyc ugly.

The rest is just decent.

Well Tazanite is really great ink but I dobn't like the color.

Tell me what you think about Edelstein series?

I agree with your review, which is fantastic, by the way.

Topaz is pretty much my favourite ink across all brands/ranges.

I really like Turmaline.

Amber, while variable, can look great and Aventurine is ok but feathers badly.

I haven't tried the others, so I must have chosen well with my purchases.

Wow...great review of this particularly want-to-be-fancy line of inks....personally I too enjoyed Topaz, but being a vintage pen user, I tend to be bothered by the fact that it sometimes stains plastics, is generally not so easy to clean out of a pen (so very saturated...) and it can smudge (saturation again..). I'm staying with Rohrer&Klingner!

I only have Garnet and I totally agree with your assessment. Out of my >140 bottles of inks, this is one of those that most disappointed me.

Thanks for such a comprehensive review. I've only tried a few of the Edelstein inks, but my limited experience matches your observations. Garnet was so disappointing. Blue/blacks are a favorite of mine- conservative enough for work and easy to read- so I like Tanzanite, but doubt I'll buy more once the sample is gone. Tourmaline looks intriguing, but there are plenty of non-premium purple inks out there.

Fantastic review! I'm eagerly awaiting the results of the fade test. I wonder if you will see the same extreme fading of some colors after only 3 weeks as in that other thread.

Very nice comparison as always!

I've got a sample of Aventurine, which I haven't tried yet. This thread has made me want to try Topaz as well.

So many inks, so little time...

I haven't tried any of these, so I was very interested in the comparisons.

I thought my vote would go to Topaz or Tanzanite, but when I saw Turmaline it was all over.... :puddle:

Thanks for doing this.

This was quite a detailed review! I'll agree that I was underwhelmed by this line.

I also see that the OP got the same effect with the Amber that I do: it has a bluish component that comes out in some writing situations and ruins what would be a nice color.

Wow! Great shots!

Turmaline all the way!!!

Tanzanite close second, such a great writer (Coming from someone who is not into blue inks ;))

Amazing review, thanks. I too am underwhelmed. That said, I just picked up Turmaline because it happens to flow really well from my Platinum 3776 Century Fujin/Raijin. Not a color I'd normally choose, but when a pen and ink align then gotta do it.

I also have Mandarin and Aventurine. Do I have Tanzanite or was that just a sample....? I had a sample of Onyx.

By and large these inks are not worth the money. Bottle looks cool, but each has a unique problem. Mandarin is weak, but it dries fast and does not feather. Aventurine feathers badly. Onyx is meh for a black.

Hoping Turmaline works out better.

Very strange. I have found the four Edelstein inks I purchased very pleasing, very high quality, very complex inks.

At least on the paper I use (either Rhodia or Clairefontaine graph paper notebooks), the inks are really good performers. But I must be missing something since so many FP Networkers find them so wanting. For me, Turmaline is a great shader, Amber has multiple colors all at once, and Jade is a great teal ink. Topaz is pretty, but not nearly as interesting as the others, in my humble opinion.

Like you, I too am puzzled, although unlike you I only have one - Garnet.

I like the colour, it flows very well using different pens, and seems to also write well on different papers.

Thank you! Now, we need to test them for light exposure because Tanzanite has had these fade in a closed Moleskine.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Erm, I've really grown to like Tanzanite.

I thought it lacked character when I first started using it but it's so well behaved and plays well in any pen I've plonked it in that it's always being used.
It's even made me use a Lamy (unheard of for me) and is my white EF's constant companion.

I do agree though, I don't find any of the others colours special enough to warrant the premium price asked of them.

Brilliant review again!!

OOPS, I meant, Tanzanite the FPN user, has had the Edelstein inks fade in her notebooks.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
