"safe" Fairly Cheap Converter Pens For Bsb And Bulletproof Black?

Floreat

Hi,

I will be acquiring both of these Noodler's inks in the next few days, and was wondering if they would be safe to use long term in a Lamy Vista/Safari/Al-Star or one of the cheaper Parkers with a converter fitted? I will get a new pen for each to try to avoid any problems, but I've heard that these inks can be quite harsh on fountain pen components so I'm hoping to get pens that can withstand them :)

Many thanks!

Anna

They shouldn't be too terrifying provided you maintain the pens properly and don't leave it for too long. Besides, if those inks destroyed every pen they went into, they wouldn't sell very well.

Noodlers bulletproof black is generally safe. BSB is quite another story.

What you are looking for is a Platinum Preppy. Just make sure you buy the converter which is not included with the pen.

Thanks both! I don't currently have a Preppy - it will make a nice change to all the Lamy variants that I have :) I really like those pens but I have so many of them!

I've been using a Nemosine Singularity EF for BSB for about a month. I'll probably switch to a Pilot Metropolitan F. Both are inexpensive pens, but I can write all day with a Pilot Metropolitan. And the Metro's F nib is like a western EF. An EF helps cut down on feathering and bleed-through.

I love the smell of fountain pen ink in the morning.

The only pens I've ever heard of BSB actually damaging were either Lamy Safaris or Esterbrooks, and the plastic used in the Safari's feed was supposed to have been improved since then. I've used BSB in more expensive pens without problems. It is a messy ink and requires careful cleanup, no matter what pen you put it into. There's a lot of talk about BSB "staining" pens, but in my experience it's more like a sticky, stubborn film that has to be scrubbed off. Bleach helps.

Noodler's Black is one of the most trouble-free and widely useful inks you can ever get, as long as you don't put it into any pen with a latex rubber sac/bulb/diaphragm. I no longer use any Noodler's in those.

Thanks! :) I've ordered a Preppy and converter for the BSB, and will probably get another Vista or a Black Safari for the Bulletproof Black. Does this sound sensible, do you think?

I've used a Safari on and off for almost a year dedicated to BSB with no issues. I does need cleaned a bit more often than other inks. I recently upgraded to a Pilot Metropolitan for my dedicated BSB pen. I don't expect to have any problems. I am quite skeptical of some of the claims of BSB dissolving pen parts and such, I just don't want it staining my 580s and other demonstrators, so it gets its own pen.

As for Bulletproof Black, I'd load it in any of my pens. I don't see the need for a dedicated pen for this ink.

So many inks, so little time...

I think the Jinhoa 599 would be good for ink testing. Mine write evenly until the ink supply is exhausted.

If you are not particular about barrel color, Go to Ebay and bid about $3.50 (free shipping), until the other

bidders miss one. That one will be yours. I did that on about 60 pens. I wond three : $1.89 / $2.01 / $1.68 .

Take it slowly, lest too much good luck gets you 20 pens.

What if you win more than you bargained for?

I found Noodlers Black had a lot of nib creep with a lamy safari. SO I would use a different brand for that ink. But it is well behaved, doesnt stain the pen and cleans out easily.

BSB will stain, its not permanent. It only took a year to come off my red safari :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
