Repair Of An Omas Brioni

Hi all,

I've just finished the repair of on Omas Brioni.
The section cracked/broke off at the seam between barrel and section
A poor construction if I may say, the thin wall plastic barrel sleeve cracked due to an obvious design flow.
When screwing the cap on, the conical transfer between the plastic section and the horn barrel backs up against the conical entry of the cap.
When tightening the cap firmly one creates a serious torsion force on the thin wall of the transfer between section and the inner barrel sleeve, Making it prone to to shearing/breaking the section off from thinner barrel sleeve when over tightening the cap.
The friction force between the conical contact surfaces becomes very high when over tightening the cap, and can lead to torsion shearing of the thin walled ( 0.5mm)- fragile plastic barrel sleeve during closing or unscrewing the cap.
The section front itself should logically backup against the inner diameter transfer in the cap.
In order to eliminate reoccurrence of the problem I've installed a 1mm thick washer in the cap, so the section front backs up against against the inner collar of the cap.
Doing so there is no contact between the cap entry and the conical transfer between plastic section and barrel..
Iv'e drilled the barrel sleeve deep out en and installed a new Peek sleeve with screw thread in the barrel and secured with shellack.
The new sleeve goes deep in the barrel so the piston makes it full stroke in the new sleeve.
The part of the sleeve sticking out of the barrel is also equipped with M10x0.5mm screw thread on which the adapted section screws.
On axial O ring between the section and barrel seals the assembled parts.
Complementary benefit being you can easily screw-off the section for rinsing and greasing/exchanging the piston seal.
The attached picture link shows -on top- how the pen is repaired, and below how the cracking problem was triggered.
If you have such a pen, please be careful not to over tighten the cap !
Or better, install a 1mm thick back-up washer inside the cap so the section front backs up !
Note the version I've repaired features a horn barrel and a heavy cap with a rhodium plated 14K overlay.
I'm afraid such a heavy pen will also easily break at the same weak spot when it would accidentally fall on the ground

A man of discriminating to taste, to even know the name of Brioni or Kition is something of a rarity. That said, so many clothiers of elite quality and watchmakers have pen companies like Omas and Visconti collaborate with them. A lot of them seem to be promotional items so to speak done at a price. I am impressed that people just know who they are, of course you have incredible taste in all your pens....

All the best,

Mike

Thanks for your comments !

I don't know in how far the standard Omas barrel/section design varies from the Brioni version.

I sincerely hope this potential problem is only inherent to the LE Brioni pens….

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
