J. Herbin 1670 Rouge Haematite - What Reformulation Are We Up To Now?

Hey guys,

I've got a lovely bottle of this gold and red ink, about 40% used (I tend to use it in dip pens). I believe it's the first formulation of it, as it's quite sheen-heavy.

Now I understand that this ink has undergone some changes of late, and I'm terrified that one of my favourite dip inks no longer has that amazing Lannister-style red/gold sheen!

Can anyone tell me if the most recent formulation has the gold particles still in it? If so, does it still compare to the old one? I personally didn't mind the clogging, as I used it for dip pen work.

Cheers guys!

My Vintages:

Sheaffer Triumph, Saratoga, Targa Slim and Targa Standard; Waterman 3V and 52 1/2V; Mabie Todd Swan Self Filler x 2; Eagle Unbreakable in sterling silver; Eversharp Bantam; Parker Duofold Lucky Curve BCHR and Duofold in red hard rubber; Spors Co. glass nib pens x 4; Conklin 2NL and 20P.

I am behind on this issue, I have an unopened bottle of this stuff from about 4 years ago, is it safe to use in a fountain pen, are there problems?

There are, to the best of my knowledge, three formulations of this ink. The first one is the extremely sheen-heavy one that you have in your possession, while the second one has no gold particulate (they attempted to emulate the sheen of the first formulation using dyes, as with other inks). The third formulation is what I have in my ink drawer: it's not quite as sheen-heavy as forumation 1, but there are gold particles in it, unlike the ink's second iteration.

first ink came out 4 months after V2 came out 1 month after v3 came out as far as I can tell this is the Rouge Hematite saga I'm not sure about the dates but I think only months were the difference for that ink for 1 year of celebration but it became too good...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
