Wish it had just a bit more punch to it, but it seems like a usable color for most purposes. Thanks for showing this sample.

Thanks for this. I've been trying to decide whether to try this as my first Kobe ink, and some nice shading would have tipped me over the edge into buying it. It is a nice subdued color though.

I just figured out that the color splits when doing washes, here's a very wet one to exacerbate the effect. Anyway you can get some purple when doing a regular one.

Thank you - I was thinking about getting this color but now I clearly see it's too dark to my taste. Have you tried other Kobe sepias - namely inks number: 16 (Nada Brown), 39 (Kobe Brick - well on tiny picture on eBay it looks like red, but I guess it can have some brownish accents to it) and 40 (Sumiyoshi Brown).

Best wishes

Unfortunately I have only the #3.

If I remember correctly, Saskia posted some pics of #39 showing it has some pink overtones - not something you would really want in a "brown".

#16 and #40 - maybe someone else could chime in.

I just ordered this Kobe Sepia yesterday and cannot wait to receive it. Napalm, I agree that it's not really brown, I would have called it Taupe, whatever it is, I love the color and cannot wait to receive it <3

I recently got some Sailor Doyou and it seems to have a very similar color, though a bit darker unless run through a dry nib. Taupe is a color that I have not explored, but in fact quite enjoy. Very calm and usable, with a little variation and something you don't get with ball points or gels.

Robert.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I am particularly impressed by the Kobe line of inks and would probably choose them as my "if you could only pick one" brand. After sampling I selected #40 Sumiyoshi as "my" brown as it has a lovely balance between grey and brown, and has become my favorite Taupe (hats of to R&K Sepia, Herbin's Cacao and, maybe, Pilot Yama Guri, among many others).

... but I recently picked up a Sailor Sapporo (=ProGear Slim Mini!) in Taupe and the MF nib needs something with a bit more substance to give the Brown sufficient presence on the page. I tried Macassar, which I love, but that's a proper warm brown, so I looped back to my old samples and found Kobe #3, which I initially rejected as too saturated, seems like the perfect thing. Not delivered yet but I thought it might be worth sharing, #40 works great in italic, fude or broad nibs but I'm hoping #3 will be just the ticket for M and anything finer.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
