What Should I Do Now?

Hi fellows Fpners.

Once more I am looking for advice. I have a nice Bexley Corona. The pen was sent over a year ago to receive a steel barrel and get some extra mm in length.

Mr Burton got busy and to make it short, I went overseas for six months without the pen, saying to Mr Burton that it would be OK for me if the pen was ready only when I would return home, this July (so one month ago).

I sent multiple emails, but after last November, I was not entitled to any answer. I tried a phone call, the number is not good anymore. So about three weeks ago I sent a very polite, maniscipt letter, asking him about the pen and offering some options, including that he sends me money so I could at least buy the Corona again (and the h*** with customization).

I still have no answer.

So, what should/can I do now? I am sure Mr Burton is a nice, honest, competent man and sure I hope nothing bad happened to him. But.

But he does have a pen worth 150$ (I include the shipping fees to Canada here), and a pen I do like a lot. I feel like a theft occurred. I feel pretty bad and stupid about that too.

If anyone have any news about Mr Burton, I would really appreciate. And if anyone have an idea of what I should/can do do now, it would really be great.

Thank you for reading!

Who is Mr. Burton ? What is the name of his business ?

You've got his address since you sent him a pen. Put his address in Google and see if you can get a different phone number. If that doesn't work, send him a registered letter requesting your pen back or the money. This way you'll have his signature that he received it, in case you choose to pursue it legally, later.

Franklin-Christoph, Italix, and Pilot pens are the best!
Iroshizuku, Diamine, and Waterman inks are my favorites!

Apica, Rhodia, and Clairefontaine make great paper!

The website "seems" live - not dead. But who is to say when the last time it was updated.

What he said. He makes / used to make custom barrels, and his work looks pretty amazing!

Already sent a letter, but not registered. I must say I was not thinking about pursuing. Thanks for the advice!

As far as I can tell, there was no update for at least one year and a half. I know, because it has been said elsewhere, that Mr Burton is really busy, I guess with his job,and that he doesn't have any more time for pens, and I totally understand that, but...

Yes - you seem to be a VERY understanding and patient person, but he has an ethical responsibility to either provide the service that he advertises, return the pen, or to reimburse you in full. He does not have any right to just ignore you. I, also, hope nothing is wrong in his family, but the time frame in which he has failed to respond is unacceptable.

I looked at FPN, and if it's the same Chris Burton, he is a member, but he was last active in May of this year. That doesn't bode well. His web site says that he lives in LA. If he still does, you may want to try and call information for his number, provided it's not unlisted - I think it's the area code, then 555-1212. You could try the same area code that you currently have. Other than the registered letter, I'm not really sure what else you can do. I sure hope you can get it resolved.

Thanks! As mentioned on the first post, I did try a phone call. I was able to find his phone number without any problem. This is not the first time (with the same pen, same order) that Mr Burton was difficult to talk to, and he did, somewhere last year, offer apologies. But since then, nothing. That he was active here last May raises questions, because that's about the moment I did send several emails...

  • 1 month later...

Hi everyone. I am making a little update here, hoping to receive Info's and recommendations.

I finally sent a recommended letter to Mr Burton - from Québec to California... - and it seems that nobody was there to receive the letter. I am now waiting and hope that someone will show up at the post office.

But I think I have to face it: the Corona is gone, and gone for good. Not a pricy pen, but if you add shipping's fees, it still adds on to 200ish $... And a beloved pen gone.

I hope nothing bad happened to Mr Burton, and I know that being concerned by a pen is kind of childish, but I do feel as I've been robed.

In case the letter is not picked up, what can I do? Is there any place I could fill a complaint?

Thanks!

I really don't know, other than 1. file a report with the police, or 2. hire a detective, or 3. try to forget about it, get yourself a replacement, and move on. If nothing happened to him, and he's capable of carrying on life activities, then he's a very unethical person.

Is there a pen club in the LA area that might be able to help you? Usually pen people in an area personally know each other. You might find a trail there.

Did I read that this guy is in the LA area? I am *only* 3 hrs north of LA, and while I despise the city, going to knock at his door to represent a very decent and caring FPN'r sounds kinda fun. Need help? It would give me a reason to take my new bicycle to the paved bike path that starts in Santa Monica, and goes 17 miles south. Most of it is within easy sight of the ocean, with only the beach in the way. Come on… give me a reason to go to LA!

Well, it's going to be 3/ forget about it. Replacement will have to wait. I guess what makes me feel sad it that the custom job I was hoping for was quite interesting... And in any case I am not going to see it happen.

I was about to offer the same. I don't go to LA often, but I'll be there next weekend, and if he's in the same general area I'll be in (LA is sprawling, so there's a good chance he's not), I'd happily swing by. I'm certainly closer to him than you are.

If you send me a PM with his address (or even zip code), I can let you know if I can be of any help. :)

Did you pay whatever amount you paid him using a credit card? If so, your CC company may be able to do something to help at least get your money back.

No, nothing paid except for the shipping fees. I do have am address, it's just that the man doesn't seem to live there anymore. Beside not answering his emails, he is indeed inactive here since May. My guess is just that something happened in his life, and I just hope it was a good news (like a job promotion demanding moving city/country/continent) and not a bad one.

I guess I've pretty much done all I could without being rude or offensive, and maybe I just needed to hear that the best thing was to let it go (thanks, Blue_moon! Maybe the best advise here...).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
